New York Philharmonic Assistant Conductor Daniel Boico will step in for Music Director Emeritus Kurt Masur in the Orchestra's performance of Sofia Gubaidulina's Two Paths: Music for Two Solo Violists and Symphony Orchestra, featuring Principal Viola Cynthia Phelps and Associate Principal Viola Rebecca Young, Wednesday, April 13, 2011, and Thursday, April 14, at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, April 16, at 8:00 p.m., as well as at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, New Jersey, on Friday, April 15, 2011, at 8:00 p.m.

In May 2011, The New York Philharmonic This Week - the two-hour, national weekly and international radio program of concerts by the New York Philharmonic, hosted by actor Alec Baldwin - begins with commercial New York Philharmonic recordings of past performances. They include Bloch's Concerto Grosso No. 1 (conducted by Charles Munch, with pianist Walter Hendl as soloist, recorded 1948); Ben-Haim's Sweet Psalmist of Israel (conducted by Leonard Bernstein, with Sylvia Marlowe, harpsichord, and Christina Stavrache, harp, recorded 1959); and Shostakovich's Symphony No. 13, BabiYar (conducted by Kurt Masur, with baritone Sergei Leiferkus and the Men of the New York Choral Artists, Joseph Flummerfelt, director, recorded 1993). The following week pianist Emanuel Ax - who is celebrating his 100th performance with the Philharmonic - will play Debussy's Estampes for solo piano, followed by Messiaen's Couleurs de la cité céleste, conducted by Music Director Alan Gilbert, who will also lead the Orchestra in Mahler's Symphony No. 5.

Mr. Salonen leads Haydn's Symphony No. 8, Le Soir; Bartok's Piano Concerto No. 1, with Olli Mustonen as soloist; Ligeti's Clocks and Clouds, featuring the Women of New York Choral Artists, Joseph Flummerfelt, director; and Bartok's Suite from The Miraculous Mandarin. The following week Michael Tilson Thomas conducts Prokofiev's American Overture for Orchestra, Op 42; the New York Premiere of Sofia Gubaidulina's In Tempus Praesens, Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, with Anne-Sophie Mutter, The Mary and James G. Wallach Artist-in-Residence, as soloist; and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 2, Little Russian.

Music Director Alan Gilbert, The Yoko Nagae Ceschina Chair, will lead the New York Philharmonic on the EUROPE/SPRING 2011 tour, May 12-24, 2011. The tour - the fourth with Mr. Gilbert as Music Director - will take the Orchestra to musical capitals of Central Europe, with eleven concerts in nine cities: Basel, Switzerland; Baden-Baden and Munich, Germany; Vienna, Austria; Budapest, Hungary; Berlin, Dresden and Leipzig, Germany; and Prague, Czech Republic. Although Mr. Gilbert has a long history conducting in Europe, and has taken the Orchestra on two previous European tours, this will be his first appearances in all nine cities as Music Director of the New York Philharmonic.

Pianist Jonathan Biss will make his Carnegie Hall recital debut in the Stern Auditorium on Friday, January 21. The program for this concert is Janá?ek's Sonata 1.X.1905, From the Street; the New York Premiere of Bernard Rands's Three Piano Pieces; Beethoven's Sonata No. 23 in F Minor 'Appassionata'; and Schumann's Fantasy in C Major, Op. 17. Ms. Mutter's programs will reflect a mix of eras, offering established violin repertoire alongside new works.
