BWW Review: Woolly Mammoth's WOMEN LAUGHING ALONE WITH SALAD

Lettuce and laughter were being tossed in abundance at last night's opening, and world premiere, of playwright Sheila Callaghan's new play, WOMEN LAUGHING ALONE WITH SALAD, the inaugural production of Woolly Mammoth's 36th season. The play is among the more than fifty works by women being featured in DC theaters during the Women's Voices Theater Festival this fall. Woolly Mammoth has a well-earned reputation for presenting bold works that challenge audiences, and push the boundaries of how stories are being told on stage. WOMEN LAUGHING is a perfect fit for Woolly Mammoth, and for the cast and creative team who have crafted this piece.

BWW Reviews: Theatre J Strikes Comic Gold with LIFE SUCKS

Filled with laughs and anarchic asides, as well as a healthy dose of audience participation, Theatre J has an unqualified hit in Aaron Posner's Life Sucks [Or the Present Ridiculous]. Here we have Posner's thoroughly irreverent, Jewish take on Uncle Vanya, Russian playwright Anton Chekov's classic tale of unrequited love and unfulfilled lives. Forget the theatre history lecture, however; this is pure slapstick at Chekhov's expense and nothing to be intimidated by in the least.

BWW Reviews: A Stunning, Moving ENTER OPHELIA, DISTRACTED, from Taffety Punk

A fascinating blend of dance, monologue, dialogue, lights, sound effects and live music, 'Enter Ophelia, distracted' gives you a piercingly perceptive look into the psyche of a young girl fated to lose first the love of her life, then her father, her mind, and then her life. Ophelia's fictional fate resonates strongly with women to this day, and Kim Gilbert-with the help of Choreographer Erin F. Mitchell-has plumbed her depths in ways that are intensely personal and unforgettable. The intimate confines of the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop fairly burst with the passions unleashed in this piece.

BWW Reviews: Forum Theatre's PLUTO Delves into the Surreal

PLUTO, the new play by Steve Yockey now playing at Forum Theatre as part of the National New Play Network's Rolling World Premier, is laden with mythological symbols scattered about a most ordinary looking kitchen inhabited by a seemingly normal mom and her 20ish-year-old son. There is the three-headed dog, Cerebus, named for the mythological creature that guarded the underworld. There is Death, who, grim-reaper like, rumbles behind the door of the ordinary looking refrigerator, seeking access to the latest of the newly dead. And then, there is the macabre backstory of the young man's father who died laughing hysterically in his sleep, clad in the new green pajamas sold to him by Death as a salesman at the local mall.
