Mama's unconventional brand of mentorship meets her students at their most vulnerable moments, helping them combat prejudice and discover themselves-and doing it all with class and with charm!

In 2016, I saw 120+ productions, the majority of which were in the DC Metro Area. The 2016 calendar year offered a slew of memorable theatergoing experiences, but some stand out among the others. As I look forward to what's in store theatrically in 2017, I take a look back at 2016.

Today's subjects are living their theatre lives overseeing the nightly operations for one of the most ambitious productions the area has ever seen. It's so big that it took two theatres to co-produce it. I'm speaking of Round House Theatre and Olney Theatre Center's production of Angels in America, Tony Kushner's two-part, nearly-seven-hour Tony Award-winning magnum opus. Millennium Approaches (Part 1) and Perestroika (Part 2) run in repertory through October 30th and are performed at Round House Theatre in Bethesda, MD.
Roundhouse and Olney Theatre's joint production, while long by contemporary theatre-going standards, is as rewarding and heart-warming an evening of theatre as you will ever see. Director Ryan Rilette guides his all-star cast with a sure hand, and the results are unforgettable.
Angels in America: Millennium Approaches is not just a national treasure, it is a glimpse of history in the making; it is a then-marginalized community seizing the stage, demanding attention, and beginning the long process of changing hearts and minds across the country. To watch the kaleidoscope of characters, brilliantly portrayed here by some of Washington DC's finest actors, can be incredibly moving. Not just for the performances themselves, which are memorable indeed, but for how those performances remind us of the changes this play made possible.

Director Marcus Kyd has assembled a solid roster of professional actors to give Michael Milligan's mythic drama, composed entirely in iambic pentameter, a grand staging. On the Globe Theater's stage it was the actor's presence, the actor's gift of language that held the audience rapt with attention. Kyd's cast understands this, and gives vivid life to every one of Milligan's lines.
In Chekov's THE SEAGULL, writer Constantin Treplev says: 'We need new forms of expression. We need new forms, and if we can't have them we had better have nothing.' And, with THE SEAGULL, the first of his four great plays, Chekov did indeed introduce a new form of theatre -- one that replaced the melodrama popular at the time with realism. Chekov's characters were real people, having real conversations, and doing real things. It wasn't always successful in his time (read about it in the STUPID F**KING BIRD Playbill), but it had a huge impact on theatre.

An event unlike any other at Theater J, this party to benefit the nation's most distinctive and progressive Jewish theater will provide an exclusive look at Immerwahr's first season as artistic director, which begins in September 2016. During the event, Adam and a team of Theater J's favorite artists will announce the 2016-2017 Season. Scenes from the upcoming season will be performed by actors including, Joshua Adams (The Sisters Rosensweig and The Intelligent Homosexual's Guide…), Kimberly Gilbert (Life Sucks and The Religion Thing), Naomi Jacobson (Life Sucks and The Disputation), Erika Rose (Falling Out of Time and In Darfur), Michael Russotto (Falling Out of Time and The Sisters Rosensweig), and others.
