Red Hen Press Announces the Winners of 2013 Awards Series

Red Hen Press is pleased to announce the winners of its 2013 awards series. The Benjamin Saltman Poetry Award, theRHP Short Story Award, and the RHP Poetry Award are given each year for, respectively, an unpublished original poetry collection, short story, and individual poem. Together with the A Room of Her Own Foundation, Red Hen Press also awards the To the Lighthouse Poetry Publication Prize to a female author of an unpublished original poetry collection. Last year, Red Hen Press and The Los Angeles Review held the first annual Wild Light Poetry Contest for an original poem. All winners receive publication and an honorarium.

Silver Spring Stage to Present THE PILLOWMAN, 11/1-23

Silver Spring Stage presents The Pillowman by Martin McDonagh, directed by Craig Mummey and produced by Pauline Griller-Mitchell and Amy Sullivan, an engrossing and provocative drama that centers on a writer in an unnamed totalitarian state who is being interrogated about the gruesome content of his short stories and their similarities to a series of child murders. With dark echoes of the Grimm tales, this is an unflinching examination of the very nature and purpose of art. The Pillowman will perform weekends November 1 to 23.

ALTERED STATES, Concert for Peace and more Set for Fulcrum Point New Music Project's 15th Anniversary Season

Marking its 15th Anniversary this year, Chicago's Fulcrum Point New Music Project has grown into a critically acclaimed ensemble performing adventurous contemporary classical music programs in a variety of Chicago area venues. In 2013, Fulcrum Point continues this tradition with a wide ranging season including a performance with 100-member orchestra of the John Corigliano film score, 'Altered States,' accompanying the film screening, April 23, in honor of the composer's 75th birthday year, along with presenting a free Concert for Peace in the Pritzker Pavillion at Millennium Park with special guest artists, sarod virtuoso Soumik Datta and the Chicago Children's Choir, September 11.

Older & Reckless, MOonhORsE Dance Theatre's celebrated series curated by Artistic Director Claudia Moore, continues its 2012/13 season with 2 SOLOS | A DUET | AN ENSEMBLE featuring ten dance artists from around the globe in works by Canadian choreographers Peter Bingham, Denise Fujiwara, Peter Chin and Nancy Latoszewski (Greyeyes). Edition #28 of Older and Reckless runs March 8 to 10 at Dancemakers Centre for Creation.

Dance New Amsterdam Welcomes Back Neal Beasley and Bradley Teal Ellis to 2012-2013 DNA PRESENTS Season

Dance New Amsterdam (DNA) welcomes back two of its veteran artists, Neal Beasley and Bradley Teal Ellis, to the 2012-2013 DNA PRESENTS season for the second installment of the SPLICE series. This set of performances matches unique artists that share a common thread into a performance setting that offers insightful perspectives into the breadth of contemporary dance. Beasley's every adam belonging to me and Ellis's (american)guilt both deal with personal, gender-centric journeys of interrogation en route to a more nuanced definition of identity. Performances are February 6-9. All shows are at 7:30 p.m., with an additional matinee performance on Saturday, February 8 at 3:00 p.m. A corresponding gallery exhibit will also be on view during the run.

Reopening the investigation into how audiences become political activists by laughing their asses off, this hilarious portrayal of authoritarian corruption opens tonight, January 19, 2013, and runs through March 2, 2013 at Oracle Theatre (3809 N Broadway in Chicago).
