CAROL LIPNIK  will celebrate her upcoming album Goddess of Imperfection, with a special concert at Joe’s Pub (425 Lafayette Street, NYC) on Tuesday, April 5 at 7:00 PM.

It took longer to read the notes for Joan Tower’s “Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman, No. 1” than it did for the New York Philharmonic under Jaap van Zweden to kick off the first program in its current concert series, “Authentic Selves: The Beauty Within”. But it was a fitting opening for the evening, which featured countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo (the Phil's current James G. Wallach Artist-in-Residence) and cabaret diva Justin Vivian Bond--not only exciting in the piece itself but for what lay ahead in the evening.

New York cabaret is back and in many ways, it is better than ever. We can take pride in a community that is stronger, more supportive, and more diverse than it has ever been. There is, of course, much to do still, but we are on a path that may lead us toward a second “golden age” of New York cabaret that could rival the 1980s. The signs are all around us. Not only have most of our cabaret rooms survived the pandemic, but we have also seen the birth of new spaces this year. There is more crossover between Broadway and cabaret than we have seen in decades, and thanks to social media, there are more new artists on the scene as well. Even with all the pandemic woes, as Jerry Herman would say “the best of times is now. As for tomorrow, well, who knows…who knows…who knows?”

The New York Philharmonic has announced details of Authentic Selves: The Beauty Within, a festival exploring the complexities of identity through orchestral and small-ensemble concerts, panel discussions, educational initiatives, and additional events.

The kooky Christmas show marks the pair's return to the boisterous characters, a boozy aging chanteuse, Kiki, and her loyal accompanist, Herb. In SLEIGH, traditions are turned upside down. Don't expect a Christmas revue. Many of the songs are Christmas-adjacent or Christmas-obscure, but they suit the myriad moods of the season remarkably well.

In 2021, PRC hosted more artist residencies than ever before, welcoming more than 80 artists to the Center, and will open applications for additional residency opportunities through its RETREAT & RESTORE program on December 7, 2021 for two March 2022 residencies.

The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago will present Music Talk: Justin Vivian Bond and Jim Hodges, featuring acclaimed singer-songwriter, author, painter, performance artist, and actor Mx. Justin Vivian Bond with longtime friend and collaborator, visual artist Jim Hodges.

Justin Vivian Bond brought vself new show STORMING THE GLAMPARTS to Joe's Pub inside the beautiful Public Theatre this week. I was lucky enough to catch Thursday night's performance and was dazzled by the brilliance of Bond's talent, brains, and beauty. V is a true one-of-a-kind entertainer. V is outrageous while being grounded in very traditional entertainment forms. V presents vself as a chanteuse with a good deal of diva energy. V arrangements by musical director, Matt Ray are all firmly rooted in the cabaret vernacular. But Justin Vivian Bond goes to a level beyond simply cabaret. V show is a good-natured exposé of everything that's important in 2021. And even though Bond claims to rate low on the empathy scale, v show is the perfect picture of inclusion, empathy, and love.
