Nashville Opera will present the company’s ninth world premiere - THE COOK-OFF - in a double bill with Lee Hoiby and Mark Shulgasser’s Julia Child- opera, BON APPÉTIT!, on November 15, 16, and 17 at the Noah Liff Opera Center.  

Admittedly, I have a soft spot for stories about the Asian-American experience. Korea, in particular, has always fascinated me. When I was growing up, I heard my mother’s stories about her life in Korea and the challenges she encountered as an immigrant to the United States. My grandmother’s hardships were worse. Entering the United States as an adult was a culture shock. A new language, different customs, and a life that was completely unrecognizable from the one she had known for thirty years took a toll. I wish I had listened more and asked more questions. She was lonely and yearned for companionship with someone who understood her unique position, much like the two characters in Lloyd Suh’s poignant take on friendship, The Heart Sellers. Its Northern California premiere is happening now at Capital Stage, after which it will then go on to two other Bay Area theatres in a triple co-production.

New York's first disability-affirmative opera company Opera Praktikos (OPrak) will present “There Will Be Cake” – a matinee mono-opera concert series on Thursday-Saturday, December 12-14, 2024, at 1:30 p.m., at downtown Manhattan's Asylum NYC.

Cabaret singer Michael Walters, who has the distinction of being the longest-running Dame Edna tribute act in the world, is making his off-Broadway debut with the character on Saturday 9/7 at the Triad Theater. What did our critic think of NUNSENSE at 29 Theatre?

Pardon me a second, but I seem to be noticing stretch marks on my suspension of disbelief. Three nights before the curtain rose on the touring version of MRS. DOUBTFIRE that rolled into Belk Theater, I saw a rather fine production of Twelfth Night across town at Central Piedmont College. Since both of the brief runs include at least one matinee between now and Sunday, my experience of seeing two wives who fail to identify their true husbands can be intensified, compressed into the space eight hours, if you wish, after my relatively relaxed 75-hour exercise.

Earlier this season, Theatre 29 announced the desert debut of the Off-Broadway musical “Disenchanted” as part of their 2023-24 season. Due to unforeseen casting difficulties, they were not able to continue that project.
