On Monday, February 29, 2016, the Broadway at Birdland concert series will be presenting Elegies for Angels, Punks and Raging Queens as a benefit concert. With music by Janet Hood, lyrics and additional text by bill Russell, the piece is comprised of songs and monologues inspired by the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt and Edgar Lee Masters' Spoon River Anthology. Last night was the first of two nights of the 25th anniversary concert of The Secret Garden at Lincoln Center and by all reports the star-filled concert practically blew the roof off of the building. The concert performances of the TONY Award-winning musical featured a stunning Broadway and television cast, creative team, the New York City Chamber Orchestra, and a grand 200-voice chorus from across the United States. DMI Soundtracks announced today that the Broadway cast album of Amazing Grace will be released on February 26; with digital download pre-orders available on February 12. Amazing Grace will be available to purchase on all digital download and streaming services, as well as in-store. The recording was co-produced and engineered by six-time Grammy Award winner Frank Filipetti and co-produced and arranged by Joseph Church.
On February 25th, Feinstein's/54 Below will present 'In Memoriam,' a concert celebration of this season's Broadway and off-Broadway shows that have closed too soon. Original cast members from Allegiance, Amazing Grace, Gigantic, and Spring Awakening will be performing songs from their shows, and sharing some behind the scenes stories and photos.
While sports-lovers are gearing up for football's biggest night, theatre people are probably more interested in the performances than the Panthers and Broncos. Tonight's halftime show will feature Coldplay, with Beyonce and Bruno Mars, but before that, Lady Gaga will kick off the night with the National Anthem. She joins the ranks of such music legends as Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Billy Joel, Ray Charles and many more, in singing the beloved tune for Super Bowl 50 at Levi's Stadium, Santa Clara, California.
