Hawkins, Associate Artistic Directors) is proud to announce that Adinah Alexander (Kinky Boots; Wicked; Parade); Marc Kudisch (9 to 5, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Bells Are Ringing, Finding Neverand); Liz Larsen (Tony nominee for The Most Happy Fella; Beautiful, the Carole King Musical; Hairspray); Nancy Opel (Tony nominee for Urinetown; Honeymoon in Vegas; former member of TACT); Andrew Samonsky (South Pacific, Drood); and Karen Ziemba (Contact, Curtains, Prince of Broadway), along with Alison Blackwell, Wayne Pretlow, Ric Ryder, Patton Chandler, and Ella Mora will star in an evening of song to benefit the company, supporting and celebrating TACT's mission and programming for the past 25 seasons. Most of all, perhaps, is the sense of the theater as a helter-skelter, seat-of-the-pants, totally precarious enterprise, in which people start out to cast or produce a show with no idea how it's going to be completed, without necessarily even a script, and in which the way to make the final product viable, let alone successful, is, as the script keeps saying, a mystery.

Very few directors will stick with a singular playwright for a majority of their career, but that is not the case for David Staller. TACT/The Actors Company Theatre presents the Off Broadway premiere of HARD LOVE, the searing 2003 play by Israeli playwright Motti Lerner. This first play of the 2015/16 season -- the company's 23rd -- is directed by TACT Artistic & Executive Director Scott Alan Evans, who most recently directed Beyond Therapy by Christopher Durang. The show is currently playing at Theatre Row's Beckett Theatre. The play celebrated its opening last night, October 11th, and performances continue through October 31, 2015. I want to express the deepest gratitude to the director, Igor Goldin, for not directing his actors into a corner with this show. Each and every person onstage had a story to tell, and not just some façade to put on: a worry I typically have when viewing a comedic musical. Even each member of the ensemble had fantastic individuality and characterization that it makes one wonder whether an ensemble needs to necessarily “blend together” – which, in fact, is quite difficult not to do when the show decks out its actors in outrageous costumes that make Betsy Johnson and Alexander McQueen look (I won't be forgetting you, anytime soon, Sausage Dress…). Though, it's the joint effort between the lead players and supporting players that create magic on that stage, and this cast did just that.
