Dorset Theatre Festival will stage John Patrick Shanley's Outside Mullingar, a Tony-award nominated romantic comedy from the Academy Award winning writer of Doubt and Moonstruck. The production will be directed by John Gould Rubin and will run from tonight, July 30th to August 15th.

Samuel French presents The Samuel French Off Off Broadway Short Play Festival, the nation's premier short play competition August 4 - 9 at the East 13th Street Theater (Classic Stage Company). Chosen from over 1,500 submissions (a record breaking number) from the U.S. and abroad, 30 finalist plays, each running 10-30 minutes in length, will be presented. The Sunday, August 9th presentation is the culmination of the week-long festival at which the six winning plays will be presented.

Company of Fools, as part of their 20th Celebration Season, has created a 20th Season Souvenir Book. Featuring Kirsten Shultz's photography, tributes, reflections and stories from the Company's artists, this special book is an entertaining and profoundly personal history of the Fools.

The Attic Theater Company presents John Patrick Shanley's (pictured, left) the dreamer examines his pillow, directed by Laura Braza. The first official revival of the play since its premiere in 1986, the dreamer examines his pillow will play a strictly-limited Off-Broadway engagement at The Flea Theater (41 White Street, Tribeca) tonight, July 25th through Saturday, August 15th.

Vassar & New York Stage and Film, whose 31st Powerhouse Season is underway in Poughkeepsie, have announced additional casting for their summer collaboration, running through August 2.

The Samuel French Off Off Broadway Short Play Festival, the nation's premier short play competition, announces the 30 finalists for its 40th Anniversary of the Festival.  Chosen from over 1,500 submissions (a record breaking number) from the U.S. and abroad, these 30 plays will be presented during a week-long festival August 6th-9th. All performances will take place at the East 13th Street Theater (Classic Stage Company).

New York Stage and Film has announced its inaugural Filmmakers' Workshop, which launches July 7th on Vassar's campus as part of New York Stage and Film & Vassar's 31st Powerhouse Season. Designed to support early-career screenwriters with creative development and mentorship, the Filmmakers' Workshop features a tailored, process-oriented approach akin to Powerhouse's celebrated development of plays and musicals.

So saying, the plot of John Patrick Shanley's Outside Mullingar shows just disheartening it is when four characters are discovered to have been strangers for so long due to those undisclosed feelings that have eaten away at their souls for so long; when the time for changes arises, the obstacles which arise and the way in which each character reacts makes this such an epic story. How disheartening it is for four people to have lived over the last few years with the "what is" as the unchanging doctrine of their reality, living in anticipation of something that may or may not come and meandering in this life until fate sticks her ugly hand in to change the bleak, unmoving world that such characters inhabit. Yet, how beautiful it is to see four wildly talented actors bring such inner turmoil to a head in Cape Rep's current production of Shanley's epic play.

Playwright Wendy Graf (No Word In Guyanese for Me) explores the journey of an 'all American girl' (Annika Marks and Jeanne Syquia, alternating) as she develops from innocent youth to radicalized extremist. Anita Khanzadian directs the world premiere of All American Girl for InterACT Theatre Company, opening tonight, July 3 at the Lounge Theatre in Hollywood.

The 81st annual Grant Park Music Festival - the nation's only free, summer-long outdoor classical music series of its kind - continues into July with the theatrical A Sondheim Celebration, Friday and Saturday, July 10 and 11, 8:00 p.m. in the Jay Pritzker Pavilion of Millennium Park. Audiences are invited to enjoy a little night music and celebrate the award-winning master of the musical in A Sondheim Celebration led by Broadway conductor and long-time Sondheim collaborator Paul Gemignani, with Illinois native and Broadway veteran Elizabeth Stanley (On the Town), Broadway tenor Alexander Gemignani (Les Miserables) and the Grant Park Orchestra with guest pianist Tedd Firth performing Stephen Sondheim favorites, including selections from Sweeney Todd, Company, Into the Woods and the world premiere of A Little Night Music symphonic suite. Terry Teachout, drama critic for The Wall Street Journal, playwright, librettist, and biographer, will add another title to his impressive list of accomplishments when he makes his directorial debut next season with Palm Beach Dramaworks' production of his acclaimed play, Satchmo at the Waldorf. The piece, in which Louis 'Satchmo' Armstrong reminisces about his life and career just months before his death, closes out PBD's 2015 - 2016 season.
