Photo Flash: First Look at Strange Tree Group's THE DEAD PRINCE

The Strange Tree Group, in association with the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, is pleased to kick off its 2013-14 Season with the world premiere of THE DEAD PRINCE, an original, rambunctious, fairly-family-friendly, fairy tale muzikal, with book, music and lyrics by Jeff Award-winning playwright Emily Schwartz and directed by Lifeline ensemble member Paul Holmquist. Theatre Downtown to Stage A CHRISTMAS CAROL, 11/29-12/23

Hark how the bells, Sweet silver bells, all seem to say, Throw cares away. Ring in the holiday season at Theatre Downtown ....join us for A Christmas Carol, a traditional telling based on the beloved novel by Charles Dickens. Frank Hilgenberg directs; musical direction by Rochelle Curbow Wheeler. The show runs November 29 thru December 23, 2013.

La MaMa's Gala Honors Michael Feingold, Patsy Tarr Tonight

Since its founding in 1961, La MaMa Experimental Arts Club has been a hub for risk-taking theater artists from around the globe. La MaMa will celebrate their 2013 season of performances with a gala honoring two pillars of arts journalism: former Village Voice critic Michael Feingold, and publisher Patsy Tarr of 2wice. Throughout their long careers, these two individuals have carved out a voice for the arts, championing countless artists working across platforms.

Strawdog Theatre Company and Interim Artistic Director Hank Boland proudly announce the second production in their 2013 - 2014 season, the critically-acclaimed adaption of Charles Dickens' classic Great Expectations, adapted by Gale Childs Daly and directed by Jason W. Gerace, has been extended through December 22, at Strawdog Theatre, 3829 N. Broadway St.. The performance schedule is Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 4 p.m. Single Tickets are $28 and on sale now. Subscriptions, group, senior and student discounts are also available. Tickets may be ordered online at strawdog.org or by calling 773.528.9696.

David Drake's TAWNY, TELL ME TRUE! Begins Tonight at the Laurie Beechman

Obie Award-winning playwright/performer David Drake, who most recently headlined an all-star ensemble benefit of his landmark show The Night Larry Kramer Kissed Me for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS last spring, returns to the New York stage with TAWNY, TELL ME TRUE. Written by and starring Drake, this drag tragicomedy with music will be directed by Robert La Fosse (Tony Award nominee for Jerome Robbins' Broadway) featuring musical direction by Lance Cruce (Joan River's longtime pianist, Karen Finley's Make Love), original music by Trevor Kuprel, and video by Ned Stresen Reuter. Performances begin October 19th at The Laurie Beechman Theatre.

Varla Jean Merman and The Gold Dust Orphans Star in MILDRED FIERCE, Opening Tonight

TWEED TheaterWorks & Theater 80 St. Marks have announced the highly anticipated NYC return of Varla Jean Merman with Boston's acclaimed Gold Dust Orphans in the New York premiere of MILDRED FIERCE, a dizzily entertaining sendup of the 1945 classic 'MildrEd Pierce', which will begin previews on Saturday, October 5that Theater 80 St. Marks. The production, written by Ryan Landry will have it's official opening tonight, October 12th at 10:30PM and will continue performances until October 27th.

Legendary director/performer John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig and the Angry Inch) and sensational cabaret goddess Mx. Justin VivIan Bond (Shortbus) headline the third annual 'Out in the Woods' Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) music festival at Easton Mountain Retreat Center in the beautiful rolling hills of upstate New York today, August 10th.

The Gift Theatre artistic director Michael Patrick Thornton has announced casting for the Chicago premiere of Broadsword: A Heavy Metal Play written by Marco Ramirez (Orange is the New Black; Sons of Anarchy) and directed by Keira Fromm. Guest artists Chuck Spencer (Jeff Award-winner for Redtwist's Man From Nebraska) and Pavement Group's Cyd Blakewell (currently co-starring in Mine) join The Gift Ensemble members John Kelly Connolly (The Lonesome West), James D. Farruggio (Suicide, Inc.), Gabriel Franken (Mine) and John Gawlik (The Lonesome West).

2012-2013 Bessie Award Nominees Announced; Ceremony Set for 10/7

The New York Dance and Performance Awards (The Bessies), NYC's premier dance awards honoring outstanding creative work in the field, announced today the 40 nominees for the 2012-13 season. Announced at a press conference by members of The Bessies Selection Committee, the nominations (listed below) were made by an independent committee of 38 dance industry professionals. Produced in partnership with Dance/NYC, Bessie Award categories include Outstanding Production, Outstanding Performer, Outstanding Visual Design, Outstanding Composition or Sound Design and Outstanding Revived Work.
