In a recent interview with the San Diego Union-Tribune, Tony winner Duncan Sheik revealed that the time is drawing near for the highly-anticipated film version of his 2006 musical- Spring Awakening. He told the UT: 'We're trying to get the 'Spring Awakening' movie made this year. It's in process, and we have a fancy director (McG) and a fancy producer (Playtone, Tom Hanks' company) involved. So fingers crossed we'll be diving into it.'
Last night Atlantic Theater Company presented their annual Gala at The Pierre (2 East 61st Street). Directed by Neil Pepe with musical direction by Matt Gallagher, Writers' Choice saluted Atlantic's iconic playwrights with an evening of unexpected songs. For this year's Gala, Atlantic asked alumni playwrights to choose a favorite song and a favorite musician to perform it. Writers' Choice featured special tributes to Annie Baker, Martha Clarke, Stephen Adly Guirgis, David Mamet, Conor McPherson, and Doug Wright from presenters and performers Jonathan Cake, Bridget Everett, John Gallagher Jr., Rick Holmes, Brian D'Arcy James, Gary Jules, John Kelly, Zosia Mamet, Julianne Nicholson, Laura Osnes, Michael Park, Mary Beth Peil and Isiah Whitlock, Jr. among others. A riveting new play by Pulitzer Prize nominee and creator of TV's hit drama Brothers & Sisters, Jon Robin Baitz's Other Desert Cities was named the Outstanding Play by the Outer Critics Circle and called 'the best new play on Broadway' by The New York Times. Jackson Gay returns to direct this new production after helming the Alley Theatre's productions of August: Osage County, Red andIntelligence-Slave.
Atlantic Theater Company's ATC Uncovered is celebrating the 7th anniversary of SPRING AWAKENING on Broadway. The musical began at the Atlantic before transferring to Broadway, and stars Lea Michele, Jonathan Groff, John Gallagher, Jr., Lauren Pritchard, Lilli Cooper, Remy Zaken and more gathered at the theater on December 2nd to talk about thriving in an intimate space, performing a 'formative' project at such an important part of their lives, and what they want to collaborate on next. He reveals: 'This month we'll be celebrating the 7th anniversary of Spring Awakening on Broadway when myself and a few friends of mine bring it all back home to where it all started with a live, special event.' According to Deadline, Bill Murray will appear in HBO's upcoming miniseries OLIVE KITTERIDGE.
Based on the book by Elizabeth Strout, OLIVE KITTERIDGE is written by Jane Anderson and centers on Olive (McDormand), who lives in a New England town full of affairs, crime and tragedy. Gallagher, Jr. will play Christopher Kitteridge, the son of Olive and Henry (Jenkins). Zoe Kazan, Jesse Plemons, and John Gallagher, Jr. also recently boarded the series.
