The lack of permanence that allows new artists endless chances to bring their own interpretations to classic material is the most significant aspect that separates live theatre from movies and television. But in musical theatre, it's sometimes the case that a director/choreographer such as Jerome Robbins or Bob Fosse may create visuals that become so indelible in the public's mind that they become fixtures of most remountings. In the case of A CHORUS LINE, it's the whole show.

On November 13th, BEAUTIFUL: THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL delighted audiences with Carole King's inspiring story during its opening night at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Vancouver. Bursting at the seams with many classic tunes from the past, the show was a powerful and emotional musical experience.

Yesterday, BroadwayWorld reported that on Wednesday night, a man reportedly shouted 'Heil, Hitler, Heil Trump' during intermission at a performance of FIDDLER ON THE ROOF at Baltimore's Hippodrome Theatre. In an update published by the Baltimore Sun, we have now learned that the man, Anthony M. Derlunas, 58, had been 'drinking heavily' prior to his outburst, and was allegedly trying to express hatred for President Trump.

FIDDLER ON THE ROOF is a wonderful show about joy amidst harsh circumstances, the importance of family and community. It's also about Tradition! It's nice to see familiar things updated but not bastardized. The cast is consistently wonderful with harmonious singing and excellent dancing throughout the show, with visually striking staging of sequences that don't technically qualify as dances.

The Signature Theatre production of Thom Pain (based on nothing), by Drama Desk Award-winning playwright Will Eno and directed by Obie Award-winner Oliver Butler, has been extended by a week for a second time, the company announced today. The production, which stars Golden Globe Award-winner Michael C. Hall ("Dexter," "Six Feet Under," The Realistic Joneses), will now run through December 9, 2018.

Based on the 1993 hit film, the stage musical A Bronx Tale has two of the movie's stars collaborating behind the scenes ... with a book by Chazz Palminteri, who played Sonny on film and Robert De Niro directing with Jerry Zaks. De Niro played Lorenzo onscreen, Calogero's father. Like the film this show is an instant hit with audiences who savor and take to heart the Sicilian lifestyle. This well cast and well directed national tour plays the Hollywood Pantages through November 25.

Though it often involves individuals speaking prepared material into a microphone in front of paying customers who may be enjoying a libation or two, and though generating laughter is usually a good sign of success, the art of storytelling should not be confused with stand-up comedy.

Tickets also may be purchased in person at the Dr. Phillips Center. Tickets will be available for performances January 22 - February 10, 2019.       

Tony Award winner Laura Benanti just assumed the role of Eliza Doolittlein its award-winning production of Lerner & Loewe's My Fair Lady, directed by Bartlett Sher, for a limited engagement through Sunday, February 17.
