This Thursday, September 15th, BROADWAY SESSIONS goes 'Back to School,' welcoming an all-star roster of Broadway talent performing songs from the roles they played in their high school musicals. 

Broadway became just a little more Broadway this last week as CATS made it's return to the Great White Way. Whether or not you think Cats is a ground breaker or a punch line, one thing is certain, the man behind the music is a living legend. Andrew Lloyd Webber has been an ubiquitous part of any theatre fans experience for decades. From those first chilling organ chords in Phantom (which still gets me every time- then again I wore my Phantom T-shirt to have my 8th grade school photos taken); to the synth pop of Starlight Express; to the irresistible bubble gum goodness of Joseph; it's hard not to walk out of a Lloyd Webber show not humming the tunes. He's had hits (um, Cats is BACK), he's had misses (The Woman in White) he's blazed trails (JC Superstar is arguably the first and finest rock musical) and has written a masterpiece of a score or two along the way (Evita, and anyone remember Aspects of Love? Divine). We're celebrating the kitties' return with a Broadway Sessions stroll down memory lane with the Lord. Let the memories live again…

Jewish Plays Project (Artistic Director, David Winitsky) is proud to announce Helen Murray Pafumi has won the 2016 Jewish Playwriting Contest for her play 'Redder Blood,' selected from a high-quality pool of 204 submission and vetted by 50 artists as well as over 450 Community members across the country. Celebrating its 5th year, the Jewish Play Contest continues to encourage a new generation of playwrights to create and develop scripts that reflect the 21st-century Jewish experience in all its complexities, and to ensure that those scripts, once fully-developed, make their way onto major stages.

The highly anticipated Studio Cast Recording of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, the only stage collaboration from two masters of the American musical, Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz, debuted in the top spot on Billboard's Cast Albums chart. The album, available from Ghostlight Records, is also the 14th bestselling current album overall for the week and number 47 on the Billboard Top 200.  Digitally, the recording soared to number 5 on the iTunes Top Albums chart in its first day and was number 9 on Billboard's Current Digital Albums chart for its first week.

The Broadway at Birdland concert series was proud to present Broadway's own Phantom, James Barbour, who performed his eighth sold-out holiday concert at Birdland on Sunday. Barbour hosted a musical extravaganza that included cast members from Phantom of the Opera, including Julia Udine, Jeremy Hays, Laird Mackintosh and Jeremy Stolle, with Brian Taylor on piano. The 52nd Street Project makes a difference in the lives of countless Hell's Kitchen (Clinton) kids by pairing them with theater professionals who mentor them through the creation of original theater. Perhaps the most poignant presentations made by The 52nd Street Project are those in its semi-annual Playmaking series, which features the Project's youngest Hell's Kitchen mentees-ten year-olds who have just begun their theatrical education-writing for accomplished professional actors and revealing their work to a public audience for the first time.
