The Eugene O'Neill Theater Center has awarded multi-discipline creative artist Lin-Manuel Miranda the 18th Monte Cristo Award. An alumnus of the O'Neill, Miranda's first professional production was at the O'Neill's National Music Theater Conference with In The Heights in 2005. At my last District Competition, I had the pleasure of performing a Small Group Musical entitled 9 Peoples Favorite Thing from the musical, Title of Show. When choosing pieces to take to competition, this song spoke to me because it relies on one simple message: to have confidence in yourself even when others don't believe in you.

Celebrating 10 years of the title of the show 's debut on Broadway, its Brazilian version is now running on Rio de Janeiro. The show chronicles its own creation and follows the struggles of the author and composer and their two actress while in the creative process of the play. This new musical comedy follows the evolution and adventures of four friends in a natural history museum as they journey through time-from present day in the museum, to the past, and back again. Inspired by various exhibits (bees, reptiles, early man, ancient civilizations, and outer space), the foursome shares their stories about friendship, hoarding, hiding, laughing, living, dying, and the traumas of middle school in an attempt to step directly into that elusive present moment: into the Now. Here. This.

Should we call it "Linda and Maria Explain it All?" They certainly do in their performance of "What the Hell is Cabaret?!", to be performed four times in the coming weeks at the Laurie Beechman Theatre on 42nd Street.
