Review: ANTONÍN DVOŘÁK’S NEW WORLD SYMPHONY at Knight Theater

When Charlotte Symphony announced their 2025-26 schedule last March, they couldn’t have predicted the serendipity of two recent concerts a year later. Three subsequent events had to align. Houston Grand Opera’s world premiere recording of Jake Heggie’s Intelligence had to be released in August, and the recording, conducted by Charlotte Symphony music director Kwamé Ryan and starring soprano Janai Brugger, had to be nominated for a Grammy Award.

Review: CARMEN Sizzles with Akhmetshina Heading Stellar Cast at the Met

From her first appearance on stage, it was clear that mezzo Aigul Akhmetshina was no flash in the pan, giving us a scorching Carmen when this production was new just two years ago. The program describes the title character as “a force of nature” and that’s certainly what we got at the Met, in such arias as the Habanera (“L’amour est un oiseau rebelle”), the Seguidilla (“Pres des ramparts de Seville”) or in the opera’s Finale with Don Jose.

Review: LA BOHÈME at LA Opera

Herbert Ross’ production of Giacomo Puccini’s La Bohème currently being presented by LA Opera has everything an audience venturing to the opera could hope for. When the curtain rises on Gerard Howland’s beautifully-textured scenery, one is instantly transported to a brutally cold winter scene speckled with the soft, orange glow tantalizingly emanating from windows.

The Minnesota Orchestra and Music Director Thomas Søndergård have announced plans for the Orchestra’s 2025-26 season, a year which includes performances by star artists from cellist Yo-Yo Ma to violinist Leila Josefowicz.

Let's Hear It for the Five Winners of the Met's 2025 Laffont Competition!

Imagine being a rising young opera singer and getting to sing two solos from the stage of the Metropolitan Opera. And picture receiving $20,000 and the prestige, exposure and networking opportunities that come with it. That's what came to Sopranos Alissa Goretsky and Emma Marhefka, Mezzos Sadie Cheslak and Michelle Mariposa, and Baritone Luke Sutliff, who took top honors and applause from the crowd of thousands at the opera house on Sunday March 16.
