Former Slaves in America Reveal Their Secrets in I WAS A SLAVE

In the 1930s, thousands of formerly enslaved African-American elders dictated their full life stories during interviews that were conducted by the US federal government. The transcripts, filled with crucial details about American slavery as disclosed by the ex-slaves, were stored in six archives in the United States. Their accounts are essential to Black History Month.

New York City Opera Presents THE TURN OF THE SCREW, Beginning 2/24

New York City Opera concludes its spring 2013 BAM residency and celebrates the centennial of composer Benjamin Britten (1913-1976) with a brand-new production of Britten's chamber opera The Turn of the Screw (1954). Based on the classic ghost story by Henry James, the opera's libretto is by Myfanwy Piper. The production, conducted by Jayce Ogren, marks the opera debut of Sam Buntrock, the theater director best known for his award-winning staging of Sunday in the Park with George in the West End and on Broadway.

THE HEIRESS to Recoup During Final Week of Performances

The producers of the new Broadway revival of THE HEIRESS have just announced that the production will recoup its $3 million capitalization during the final week of performances. The final performance is on Saturday, February 9th at 7:00 p.m. (note the new early curtain time) at Broadway's Walter Kerr Theatre (219 W. 48th St. NYC). THE HEIRESS will have played 27 previews and 117 regular performances.

Dead Writers Theatre Collective has announced the Chicago premiere of Adam Pasen's Tea with Edie and Fitz, directed by Jim Schneider, April 26 - June 9, at the Greenhouse Theater Complex, 2257 North Lincoln Ave. Tea with Edie and Fitz chronicles the tempestuous meeting of literary icons Edith Wharton (Judith Hoppe) and F. Scott Fitzgerald (Madison Niederhauser) at her estate for tea in the 1920s. Meet the cast of characters in the photos below!

Photo Flash: First Look at Dead Writers Theatre Collective's TEA WITH EDIE AND FITZ

Dead Writers Theatre Collective is proud to announce the Chicago premiere of Adam Pasen's Tea with Edie and Fitz, directed by Jim Schneider, April 26 - June 9, at the Greenhouse Theater Complex, 2257 North Lincoln Ave. Preview performances are April 26 - April 28. Opening/press night is Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. and will be followed by a reception. The performance schedule is Thursdays and Fridays at 7:30 p.m., Saturdays at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2:30 p.m. Ticket prices are $15 for previews and $30 for the scheduled run. THE HEIRESS Moves Final Performance to 2/9

The producers of the new Broadway revival of THE HEIRESS have announced that the production will now play its final performance on Saturday, February 9 at 7:00 p.m. (note the new early curtain time). The previously scheduled Sunday, February 10 closing performance has been cancelled to enable Jessica Chastain, who plays the title character, to attend the BAFTA Awards (the British equivalent to the Academy Awards) where she is nominated for Best Actress on Sunday, February 10th in London. Ms. Chastain is nominated for an Academy Award and has already received Golden Globe and Critics Choice Awards for her performance in the film Zero Dark Thirty. THE HEIRESS is currently playing at Broadway's Walter Kerr Theatre (219 W. 48th St. NYC).

TURN OF THE SCREW Opens at the Almeida Theatre, January 24

Lindsay Posner directs Rebecca Lenkiewicz' new stage adaptation of Henry James' The Turn of the Screw at the Almeida Theatre which runs until 16 March 2013, with press night on 24 January. The cast comprises Caroline Bartleet (a woman), Laurence Belcher (Miles), Eoin Geoghegan (a man), Gemma Jones (Mrs. Grose), Anna Madeley (The Governess), Orlando Wells (Sackville) and Isabella Blake, Emilia Jones and Lucy Morton who will alternate the role of Flora. The Turn of the Screw is sponsored by Pinsent Masons LLP.

The Dallas Opera Hosts Dominick Argento Tonight

The Dallas Opera is particularly excited to bring Pulitzer Prize-winning American composer Dominick Argento back to Dallas after a very long absence for a special "Composing Conversation," conducted in partnership with Art&Seek, KERA's arts initiative. The visit is prompted, in part, by the Dallas Opera's upcoming 25th Anniversary production of the world premiere of Argento's masterful adaptation of Henry James' THE ASPERN PAPERS.

'Death Wish' Director Michael Winner Dies at Age 77

The Assoicated Press reports that British filmmaker and 'Death Wish' director Michael Winner has died at the age of 77. The news was shared by his wife Geraldine this morning. Winner passed away at his home in London following an illness.

Book-It Rep and UW School of Drama Host Novel Workshop Series, Now thru 1/20

Book-It Repertory Theatre and the UW School of Drama are collaborating for the second year in a series that explores potential adaptations for future main stage productions at Book-It. Four evenings of readings will take place at the Meany Studio Theatre on the Seattle campus. MFA acting, directing and design students present selections developed through intensive workshops and master classes. Selections for the 2013 series include: The Count of Monte Cristo, Run, The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, and Portrait of a Lady.

Fiona Shaw to Return to Broadway in THE TESTAMENT OF MARY; Opens 4/22

Award-winning stage and screen actress Fiona Shaw will return to the New York stage this spring with The Testament of Mary, by the acclaimed author Colm Tóibín, directed by Deborah Warner. The production will begin previews on Tuesday, March 26, and open on Monday, April 22 for a twelve-week limited engagement through Sunday, June 16 at the Walter Kerr Theatre (219 West 48 Street.) The production will not only mark the New York theatrical debut for the multi-award winning novelist but will also be the first collaboration between Fiona Shaw and Deborah Warner to premiere on this side of the Atlantic.
