Last week, I spoke with Jacob Kemp, the young actor currently starring in the national tour of Disney's NEWSIES. In addition to the tour, Jacob has been featured in a recurring role on an ABC sitcom, and he admits that he's had a very exciting and successful year. From his hotel in Los Angeles, where NEWSIES was on tour at the time, Jacob dished about his life on the road, the exciting oppertunities he's found, and the joy of working with the famous creators of his current show.
Casting has been announced for the Washington engagement of Disney's NEWSIES. The Tony Award-winning smash hit musical will play an exclusive two-week engagement at National Theatre. The production will begin performances June 9 for a limited two-week engagement through June 21.
In 1899 droves of newsboys from every borough of New York City banned together and went on strike against Joseph Pulitzer, William Randolph Hearst and other wealthy newspaper owners, in a crusade to save children from menial wages and physical abuse. This was a first, where uneducated street kids stood up to the big suits and won. In 1992 Disney created the movie Newsies that went on to become a humongous hit. In 2012 Harvey Fierstein, Alan Menken and Jack Feldman came to Broadway with a musical show they created based on the film. Under the Disney banner, the first national tour of Newsies is currently onstage at the Pantages. All I can say is run, don't walk, to purchase tickets. The Newsies ensemble pulsates from the moment the lights hit the stage. It will jolt you, fulfill you and make you jump for joy.
The Los Angeles premiere engagement of Disney's NEWSIES celebrated its opening night last night, March 26th, at the Pantages Theatre for a limited run through April 19th. BroadwayWorld has photos from the opening festivities below!
NEWSIES, the Tony Award-winning 'critics' pick' Broadway musical smash, is touring the country, currently playing at LA's Pantages Theatre. The production features Dan DeLuca as 'Jack Kelly', Steve Blanchard as 'Joseph Pulitzer', Stephanie Styles as 'Katherine', Angela Grovey as 'Medda Larkin', Jacob Kemp as 'Davey', Zachary Sayle as 'Crutchie', and Vincent Crocilla and Anthony Rosenthal alternating the role of 'Les.'

Stop the presses! Stop the presses! Newsies is hitting the headlines in a way that is worthy of front page, above-the-fold coverage. If you're looking for an uplifting powerhouse show that will inspire you to action then Newsies is the show for you.
Once upon a time, before smart phones and the Internet and Facebook, there were newspapers. And if someone wanted to find out what was happening in the world, they had to buy a paper, often from boys selling the paper on city streets, hawking its headlines like town criers.
Admittedly, I am not in the target demographic for Disney's musical NEWSIES, running through February 1st at Orlando's Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. This musical, which concluded its two-and-a-half year Broadway run last fall, has inspired a legion of young, female fans who have dubbed themselves 'Fansies.' So while I might not be who the show is normally marketed towards, I left the Walt Disney Theatre on Opening Night completely infected by the optimism, athleticism, and heart of this movie-musical adaptation. Though far from being without fault, the score (which won a Tony for composer Alan Menken and lyricist Jack Feldman), the script (by Tony-winner Harvey Fierstein), and the immense talent of the young ensemble made this a exceptionally enjoyable evening of entertainment.

NEWSIES showcases enthusiastic, athletic, acrobatic dancing- the Company is chockablock with high-end dancers equal to the complications of Christopher Gattelli's choreography, which deservedly earned this show one of its Tony awards.
