The Cleveland Orchestra Announces 2019-20 Season

The Cleveland Orchestra and Music Director Franz Welser-M st announced details of their 2019-2020 season which encompasses 76 concerts over 26 weeks. One significant highlight includes a festival designed to explore music and art that was banned, marginalized, and destroyed during the Nazi's Degenerate Art movement, and the continuing impact of censorship on creative expression in society today. The festival will center on Alban Berg's Lulu, one of the 20th century's most influential operas, and includes partner programming with the area's notable arts institutions.

League And ACO Announce Three New Women Composers Commissions

Composers Courtney Bryan, Cindy Cox, and Fang Man will each receive orchestral commissions of $15,000 as part of the 2018 Women Composers Readings and Commissions program, an initiative of the League of American Orchestras, in partnership with American Composers Orchestra (ACO) and supported by the Virginia B. The New York Philharmonic announces the first broadcasts of The New York Philharmonic This Week to feature performances from Jaap van Zweden's inaugural season as Music Director. Highlights include the World Premiere of Conrad Tao's Everything Must Go; Shostakovich's Symphony No. 7, Leningrad; Beethoven's Symphony No. 7; and Brahms's Ein deutsches Requiem, featuring The Mary and James G. Wallach Artist-in-Residence Matthias Goerne. The broadcasts will feature conversations with Jaap van Zweden and others. Additional broadcasts featuring Jaap van Zweden's inaugural season will be announced at a later date. The award-winning national and international weekly radio series hosted by Alec Baldwin is currently in its 15th season.

The New York Philharmonic will present Phil the Hall, special $5 concerts conducted by Music Director Jaap van Zweden for New York's first responders, volunteers, and other service professionals. Miss America 2019 Nia Franklin, a soprano and composer, will host the concerts, which feature iconic music central to the history of New York and its Philharmonic as well as World Premieres of works created by New York City students participating in the Philharmonic's Very Young Composers program. The Orchestra will be joined by the Westminster Symphonic Choir, directed by Joe Miller. The concerts will take place Thursday, April 4, 2019, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, April 5 at 8:00 p.m.; and Saturday, April 6 at 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
