Benedikt Fohr Appointed Chief Executive Of The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra

New York Phil Presents NEW YORK STORIES: THREADS OF OUR CITY

The New York Philharmonic will present New York Stories: Threads of Our City, January 14-27, 2019, two weeks of concerts and events examining New York City's roots as a city of immigrants. It will center on the World Premiere of Julia Wolfe's Fire in my mouth, co-commissioned by the New York Philharmonic, which reflects on the New York garment industry at the turn of the 20th century and the 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, which killed 146 garment workers, most of them young immigrants. New York Stories: Threads of Our City will also feature a program of new chamber music by composers influenced by their time in America; a special guided tour of the Tenement Museum featuring Philharmonic musicians; an archival exhibit featuring materials from the New York Philharmonic Archives, The Forward, the Museum of the City of New York, and the National Archives at New York City; and a free Insights at the Atrium event.

The 2018/19 season marks the 45th professional season of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil). Our Music Director Jaap van Zweden, acclaimed as "A Great Mahler Interpreter" by D Magazine, continues the Mahler cycle with a project dedicated to this celebratory season - Mahler $200, at which all seats for the Mahler symphonies no. 7 and no. 9 are available at a uniform price of HK$200. Members of the audience can sit somewhere new to enjoy a different acoustical and visual experience.

Music Director Jaap van Zweden will conduct Matthias Goerne's first appearance as The Mary and James G. Wallach Artist-in-Residence of the New York Philharmonic for the 2018-19 season. He will be joining the Orchestra for orchestral arrangements of selected songs by Schubert and Richard Strauss in concerts that also include Webern's arrangement of J.S. Bach's Fuga (Ricercata) from Musical Offering, BWV 1079, and Mozart's Symphony No. 40. The program takes place Thursday, December 6, 2018, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, December 7 at 2:00 p.m.; and Saturday, December 8 at 8:00 p.m.

The Marie-Josée Kravis Prize for New Music Awarded to Unsuk Chin

The Marie-Josee Kravis Prize for New Music at the New York Philharmonic, which recognizes a composer for extraordinary artistic endeavor in the field of new music, has been awarded to South Korean composer Unsuk Chin. One of the world's largest new-music prizes, the Kravis Prize includes $200,000 and a commission to write a work for the New York Philharmonic. Ms. Chin's new orchestral work will receive its World Premiere by the Philharmonic in a future season. Funding for the Kravis Prize comes from a $10 million gift to the New York Philharmonic in 2009 by Henry R. Kravis in honor of his wife, Marie-Josee, for whom the Prize is named. Past Prize winners include Henri Dutilleux, Per Norgard, and Louis Andriessen.
