San Francisco Opera Announces Cast Change for World Premiere of 'Dream of the Red Chamber'

San Francisco Opera announces a principal cast update for Dream of the Red Chamber, the new opera by Chinese-American composer Bright Sheng and co-librettist David Henry Hwang which receives its world premiere on September 10, 2016, with five additional performances through September 29. Japanese-American mezzo-soprano Irene Roberts, who is currently starring in the title role of Carmen, will now sing the role of Bao Chai, replacing previously announced mezzo-soprano Nian Wang who has determined that the vocal part was not a suitable fit for her voice and has withdrawn from the project.

San Francisco Opera Announces 2016-17 Season

San Francisco Opera General Director David Gockley and Music Director Nicola Luisotti today announced the Company's 2016–17 Season repertory and roster of international guest artists, conductors and creative teams scheduled to appear at the War Memorial Opera House, as well as initial programming for SF Opera Lab 2017 presentations at the Diane B. Wilsey Center for Opera's Taube Atrium Theater. The Company's 94th Season will also mark Matthew Shilvock's inaugural year as San Francisco Opera's new general director, succeeding his mentor and internationally respected impresario, David Gockley, who will step down on July 31, 2016.

MasterVoices, formerly The Collegiate Chorale, was honored at the Martina Arroyo Foundation's11th Annual Gala.MasterVoices was recognized along with American couture designer Joanna Mastroianni and The Michel Maurel award-winner Ernst Rieser. Brian Kellow and Terrance McKnight hosted the gala, with performances by the young artists of Prelude to Performance, Jennifer Rowley, Michele Angelini and Cecilia Violetta Lopez (both featured in the October issue of Opera News), as well as other special guests.

Ensemble 212 and Young New Yorkers' Chorus Present Concert Tonight, 4/5

Ensemble 212 and the Young New Yorker's Chorus are teaming up to present Life, Hopes & Dreams: Ke-Chia Chen & Mahler on Saturday, April 5th at 8pm. Featuring the world premiere of Yoon Jae Lee's orchestral reduction of Mahler's monumental Symphony No. 2 'Resurrection,' the New York Premiere of Ensemble 212's Composer in Residence Ke-Chia Chen's Chasing The Sun and a choral arrangement of 'Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen' performed by the Young New Yorkers' Chorus led by Michael Kerschner. The soloists are two extremely talented singers, soprano Raquel Gonzalez and mezzo-soprano Hyona Kim led by conductor Kyunghun Kim.
