On October 29, Broadway Close Up host SEAN HARTLEY and a cast of Broadway stars told the fascinating stories of musicals that never made it big by great Broadway writers like Frank Loesser, Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer, and the remarkable songs that have endured - or that deserve to be better known.

The musical for the spring 2019 at Östgota Teatern will be the rock musical Rocky Horror Show. The show opened 1973 at Royal Court Theatre in London. This will be the first time it is played at Östgota Teatern.

Out of the Box Theatrics, Founder and Producing Artistic Director Elizabeth Flemming, Associate Artistic Director Ethan Paulini present a brand new revival of Into the Woods. The classic musical features music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine. Ethan Paulini will direct. Marisa Kirby choreographs with music direction by Anessa Marie.

The McCallum Theatre presents Bob Newhart on Saturday, November 17, at 8:00 pm. One of the most important, influential, and beloved figures in the history of American comedy, Chicago native Bob Newhart has been entertaining audiences around the world for over 50 years. Bob has enjoyed success in television and films as well and hosted the "Tonight Show" an astonishing 87 times. His early TV effort, the "Bob Newhart Variety Show," earned an Emmy Award and a Peabody Award and was followed by the television success of "The Bob Newhart Show" (1972-1978) and "Newhart" (1982-1990). He has appeared in over 14 feature films, including Elf, On a Clear Day You Can See Forever, Catch 22 and Legally Blonde 2, and has starred with the likes of Steve McQueen, Bobby Darin, Barbara Streisand, Madeline Kahn and Walter Matthau. He's also provided character voices for major animated films.

Recently (and I do mean recently) another company in town did a concert staging of "Legally Blonde" utilizing actors of color in roles that they might not normally be cast including an African American "Elle". So, I questioned the logic when I heard that Seattle Musical Theater was doing the same thing right on its heels. Sure, the other one was just a concert (although so well done that it felt like a full staging) and only for four performances so maybe they just want to capitalize on that momentum with a full staging with sets and costumes and everything. Unfortunately, the Seattle Musical Theatre production of "Legally Blonde" feels so misdirected, half-assed and underdone that the only similarities are the diversity in the casting and the name.
