The Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO) welcomes back superstar pianist Lang Lang on March 1, 2018. The evening will feature a revised program: instead of the previously announced Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 3, Lang Lang will share the keyboard with Maxim Lando a Lang Lang International Music Foundation Scholar in a special arrangement of George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue. I've invited a friend to help present this piece in a very special way, says Lang Lang, who is recovering from tendinitis in his left arm. On the eve of its first performance, TheatreWorks Silicon Valley has announced that its presentation of Hershey Felder's Our Great Tchaikovsky is already establishing a new all-time box office record for the 48 year-old Bay Area theatre company and it is not even open yet. This newest work by acclaimed performer and playwright Hershey Felder is on track to shatter the theatre's previous record, set last year with TheatreWorks' presentation of Hershey Felder, Beethoven which set a high bar as the company's highest grossing show, amassing $637,767 in sales the day before opening. It has been bested by Our Great Tchaikovsky, which has now sold more than $710,000 to date, and may well top Beethoven's final sales total. This past March, at 2017's MAC Awards, honoring the best of cabaret in New York over the past season, as in most years, there were five nominees for Female Vocalist: Celia Berk, Sally Darling, Meg Flather, Josephine Sanges, and Lisa Viggiano. It's not particularly important, in this case, who won. (Flather did.) If their shared story met the usual expectations, it would've ended there and each nominee would've gone on her own way to do her next big thing. You'll be happy to hear their story defies those expectations.
