BWW Review: A Capella or Not, Oxford's Cathedral Choir Shows Fine Touch of Conductor Darlington at NY's St. Thomas 5th Ave.

I must admit that Christ Church Cathedral Choir--performing at New York's St. Thomas Church 5th Avenue last week to kick off a final tour with retiring Music Director/conductor John Darlington--knocked my socks off with the first part of its program. The men and boys of the choir--a 500-year-old institution founded in Oxford, UK, numbering just 27 voices--not only filled every inch of St. Thomas with amazing sound, as if they were many times that number, but performed the first half the program of British choral masterpieces a capella.

BWW Review: Classical Standards Play Second Fiddle to Power Anthems in ROCKTOPIA

As with the Broadway season's earlier pop concert extravaganza, HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS, this theatre critic readily admits to not exactly being an ideal arts journalist to authoritatively review the touring rock anthem/classical music fusion concert called Rocktopia that has made a stop at the Broadway Theatre. Though my knowledge of the highbrow oeuvre is perhaps slightly higher than a layperson's, my experience with classic rock power ballads rarely extends further than the snippets heard at baseball and hockey games or during the occasional car commercial.

BWW Dance Review: Anna Sokolow

All the other works on the program were by Anna Sokolow in different periods of her choreographic and teaching careers. Some had direct themes, which surprised me since I did not do any in-depth research before the performance. I preferred if the works spoke to me directly, as I had never seen any of them before in my dance going career.
