BWW Review: A Lackluster Script Spoils THE GRADUATE at Dundalk Community Theatre

Ben's character may be a phony pastiche, and Elaine's a confusing cypher, but in Elaine's mother Mrs. Robinson, novelist Charles Webb struck gold. Bored, lecherous, alcoholic, deeply dishonest, vengeful, and possessed of a twisted motherly loyalty, she is real and vital and scary as hell. Dyana Neal's Mrs. Robinson is pretty much perfect. She has the intimidating stare, the commanding manner, the resolute lack of curiosity about any aspect of the world aside from sex, tobacco, and alcohol, the maternal protectiveness, all down pat. If Anne Bancroft is looking down from heaven, she probably approves.

BWW Review: THE TROJAN WOMEN at Commonwealth Theatre Center

There is an idea that Ancient Greece was an exemplary society. Even though they did build the foundation of western civilization and democratic ideals, especially when it comes to theatre. Yet the subjects of the plays are often war and it's devastating effects on humanity. This Commonwealth Theatre Center production of Euripides' The Trojan Women makes the point that the cruel, brutality of such conflict has always been, and will always be, a part of the human experience. It seems, tragic but inevitable.

UW School Of Drama Presents 12 OPHELIAS

What if, instead of drowning, Shakespeare's Ophelia had splashed through the brook water and found a parallel universe on the other side? In playwright Caridad Svich's lyrical deconstruction of Hamlet, Ophelia cuts a new path for herself through a neo-Elizabethan Appalachia. In this world, Hamlet is known as Rude Boy, Gertrude is a brothel madam, and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are her androgynous helpers.
