Hudson Warehouse Kicks Off 15th Season With TROJAN WOMEN

Hudson Warehouse kicks off its 15th Season with their timely production of TROJAN WOMEN. Adapted by Producing Artistic Director Nicholas Martin-Smith, the script is based on the works of Charles Mee.

TROJAN WOMEN will perform for two weeks in March as part of Women's History Artist Month (W.H.A.M.) at Goddard Riverside Arts Center from March 15th - 25th, Thursdays to Saturdays at 7:30pm and Sundays at 2pm. Hudson Warehouse has been the Resident Theater Company at Goddard Riverside for six years and thrilled to present this particular play at the center with the support and collaboration of Community Arts Director, Susan Macaluso.

When Euripides's play, The Trojan Women, was first produced in 416 BCE, it was considered a penetrating depiction of the barbaric behavior of the Greeks towards the women and children of Troy, the people they conquered in the war.

"I have worked hard to keep the structure of the ancient Greek tragedy while using the text from the first part of Chuck Mee's "Trojan Women: A Love Story" to really capture the brutality that Euripides originally intended and to connect it to the times in which we now live," said Mr. Martin-Smith who also serves as the director on the project.

Hudson Warehouse Executive Director, Ms. Susane Lee, the Assistant Director of TROJAN WOMEN added, "We are living in a time where we still need to ask for women's rights and sadly a smart, strong, compassionate woman is still treated with hostility and too many men and an alarming number of woman want to silence her voice."

"There was an awakening this past fall when the New York Times first broke the story of Harvey Weinstein's sexual assault of actresses in Hollywood. This play is an apt metaphor for how powerless women have been in our society for as long as we have been a society," Ms. Lee continued.

Hudson Warehouse has been working closely with the New York City Department of Corrections. They have been invited to take this riveting production of TROJAN WOMEN into two facilities of the DOC.

"It's amazing how guns are for more protected than the rights of women. We shouldn't have to fight this hard to be heard and recognized. That's why taking this play into facilities of the New York City Department of Corrections is supremely exciting,' said Ms. Lee. ""I'm really looking forward to seeing their reaction to our TROJAN WOMEN, especially in one of the female Housing Units on Riker's Island."

Mr. Martin-Smith continued, "It is thrilling to bring this production to New York City at the Bernie Wohl Arts Center at Goddard Riverside, the cultural hub for the arts on the Upper West Side. We hope this production helps open up dialogue that is so necessary during these divisive times.

The Cast: The cast is lead by Hudson Warehouse Artist in Residence Roxann Kraemer who plays Hecuba. Roxann appeared as Beatrice in their 2016 production of Much Ado About Nothing which was nominated for a New York Innovative Theater Award for best Revival. Also appearing as her daughter, Polyxana, is Artist in Residence Patrina Carauna. Returning Hudson Warehouse alumni include Karen Collazzo, Aron Long, and Emily Sarah Cohn from His Girl Friday, Caleb Carlson and Mike Newman from Henry V and The Three Musketeers, Lisa LaGrande from Much Ado About Nothing, and Ayako Ibaraki from Same River Twice. Newcomers include Darius McCall, Callan Suozzi-Rearic, Cassidy Wingate, Ian Potter, Danielle Cohn, and Emelie Pla. Artist in Residence Nate Mattingly is cast in the role of Aeneas.
