Tonight, June 4, 2012 Julia Jordan, Theresa Rebeck, Marsha Norman, Tim Sanford, Gary Garrison and The Committee for Recognizing Women in Theatre will present the 3rd Annual Lilly Awards at Playwrights Horizons. Named for playwright Lillian Hellman, The Lilly Awards were created to recognize the extraordinary contributions made by women to the American Theater. Producers, playwrights, actors, designers, and directors will be honored for their continued excellence in the theater community.
The Long View Theater Company presents Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Paul Zindel's AND MS. REARDON DRINKS A LITTLE, directed by Jeff Woodbridge. Performances begin June 21st prior to an official press opening of June 24th at The Shell Theater (300 West 43rd Street) in Manhattan.
Today we are talking to a two-time Tony Award winning lyricist and book writer who was responsible for the 2010 Best Musical winner, MEMPHIS, and who has since written the libretto of the Gershwin revue NICE WORK IF YOU CAN GET and received a well-earned Tony nomination for his efforts; one of the show's ten nods - Joe DiPietro. In this concluding portion of our conversation, DiPietro and I break down the process of creating NICE WORK IF YOU CAN GET IT and he comments on the starry cast - including Matthew Broderick, Kelli O'Hara, Judy Kaye and Estelle Parsons - and the process of collaboration in bringing the 2012 Tony Awards top nominee to the Broadway stage. Additionally, DiPietro fills us in on the future for THE TOXIC AVENGER and its tentative Broadway plans, as well as the upcoming West End mountings of MEMPHIS and, hopefully, NICE WORK - and, a look ahead to his next David Bryan collaboration, CHASING THE SONG, as well. Actor, playwright and director AUSTIN PENDLETON will be the recipient of the 2012 ACTIVE ARTS AWARD, it was announced today by Nathaniel Shaw, Artistic Director of The Active Theater. ProArts will present "And Miss Reardon Drinks a Little" as the final show of their Spring season. This "tragic comedy" was written by Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Paul Zindel in the late 1960s and first produced in 1967 in Los Angeles.

'I feel pretty damn good! I'm exhausted because it's six in the morning here in LA, but it still feels pretty damn good! My phone started buzzing and I ran to my computer because I wasn't sure. People were texting me and saying 'I'm crossing my fingers to you' and stuff like that. So, I ran to my computer and because we're in this housing, first you have to enter your log in information and I couldn't get it to work. I'm like 'Why now?!' I finally got it to work and it was only after a friend sent me a text saying 'CONGRATULATIONS' that I thought 'Thank God!' I'm in tech right now so I'll spend the rest of the day in tech until midnight, but for this I'll do it!'

In a season as rich as this past theatrical season though, there are only so many spots for nominees and some very talented shows and performers were not nominated. Chris Sullivan made his 2010 Broadway debut as Jim Taylor in Lombardi and he just finished a run as Amos Hart in Chicago the Musical. Sullivan's regional credits include The Ballad of Emmett Till, The Hairy Ape, The Mystery of Irma Vep and Tony Kushner's The Illusion (Chicago). Defending the Caveman (Nat. Tour).
