The Riverside Opera Company, under the direction of Maestro Alan Aurelia announces a performance of 'PoPera' a mix of Opera and Broadway favorites featuring long time Riverside Opera piano accompanist Ming Kwong and sopranos Jessica Sandidge and Manna Knjoi who are winners of open public auditions, held in New York City by the Riverside Opera Company. They will sing selections of their choosing. The Little Italy Merchants Association (LIMA) will begin its 13th Annual Christmas in Little Italy celebration tonight, December 7, 2013 at 6:30 PM with a gala Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony in the Patio of Most Precious Blood Church, 109 Mulberry Street, between Canal and Hester Streets.

The Little Italy Merchants Association (LIMA) will begin its 13th Annual Christmas in Little Italy celebration on Saturday, December 7, 2013 at 6:30 PM with a gala Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony in the Patio of Most Precious Blood Church, 109 Mulberry Street, between Canal and Hester Streets.

Legendary opera star, Elaine Malbin, will be among a panel of experts judging the 13th Annual Mario Lanza and Elaine Malbin Vocal Competitions which will be held on the main stage at Broadway and 86th Street from 2:00 to 5:00 PM. Other judges will include Bill Ronayne, President of the Mario Lanza Society; Lewis Ehlers, noted opera agent and an associate with Robert Lombardo and Associates; and Cristina Necula, an opera singer and author of My Life in Opera. A total of 29 singers -- nine tenors and 20 sopranos - have registered as of this date and will compete for prizes. The competitions are the largest outdoor competitions in the country.

Opera Index presents its 34th Distinguished Achievement Award to the powerful and charismatic bass-baritone Eric Owens at its annual black-tie winter gala on Sunday, January 13. The gala, held in the Grand Salon of the JW Marriott Essex House at 160 Central Park South, begins at 6 p.m. with a reception in the Petit Salon. Presenting the award to Mr. Owens is a longtime champion of his career, Janet Stovin, the vice president of Opera Index. Last year's Distinguished Achievement Award was presented to opera pioneer and founder of Opera Orchestra of New York, Eve Queler.

Opera Exposures, the not-for-profit organization dedicated to presenting concerts and recitals featuring seasoned professional musicians and young operatic artists in accessible venues at affordable prices, will celebrate National Opera Week by presenting a FREE recital today, October 28, at 3 PM at St. Marks Church, 131 East 10th Street at 2nd Avenue in Manhattan.

Among those paying tribute to Lanza's career will be legendary soprano Elaine Malbin and featured performers soprano Emily Stokes, tenor Michael Padgett, and accompanist David Schaefer. The musical program will also include recorded selections from the illustrious careers of Mr. Lanza and Ms. Malbin.
