Miller Theatre Opens 2016 Composer Portraits Series with Ashley Fure Tonight

Miller Theatre at Columbia University School of the Arts opens its 2016 series of Composer Portraits with Ashley Fure, featuring the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) and David Fulmer, conductor, tonight, February 4, 2016, 8:00 p.m. at Miller Theatre (2960 Broadway at 116th Street).

2016 Schwabacher Debut Recitals to be Presented by San Francisco Opera Center & Merola Opera Program

San Francisco Opera Center and the Merola Opera Program present the 33rd season of the Schwabacher Debut Recitals. This season, the recitals move to the state-of-the-art Dianne and Tad Taube Atrium Theater in San Francisco Opera's new Diane B. Wilsey Center for Opera, located on the fourth floor of the Veterans Building (401 Van Ness Avenue in San Francisco). The February 28 series-opener—Ports of Call with New York Festival of Song Artistic Director Steven Blier and 2016 San Francisco Opera Adler Fellows Amina Edris, Edward Nelson and Brad Walker—marks the inaugural public performance in the Taube Atrium Theater, which boasts the innovative Meyer Sound Constellation acoustic system. The 5:30 p.m. Sunday recital series continues on March 6 with bass-baritone Daniel Okulitch and pianist John Churchwell; March 20 with baritone Efraín Solís accompanied by pianist Robert Mollicone; and April 24 with baritone Kihun Yoon and pianist Mark Morash.

Pacific Symphony Youth Wind, String Ensembles Launch Season with Respective Concerts, 11/15

Orange County, Calif.—Nov. 5, 2015—The young and highly talented Pacific Symphony Santiago Strings (PSSS) and Pacific Symphony Youth Wind Ensemble (PSYWE) are preparing to launch their first concerts of the 2015-16 season. First, the talented brass, woodwind and percussion musicians of PSYWE breeze onto the stage to perform a selection of European classics from the wind ensemble canon on Sunday, Nov. 15, at 1 p.m., in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. The program, “Europa,” features Rimsky-Korsakov's “Procession of the Nobles,” Grainger's “Lincolnshire Posy” and Walton's “Crown Imperial.” Then, PSSS celebrates its 25th anniversary and pays tribute to its founder, Lonie Bosserman, whose dream it was to create a middle-school string ensemble, by performing dream-like music for “Fantasize This!,” taking place Sunday, Nov. 22, at 4 p.m., at Friends Church in Yorba Linda.

Tonight, October 13 at 8:00 p.m., Music Director Yannick Nezet-Seguin leads The Philadelphia Orchestra in its first of four Carnegie Hall concerts this season in Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage. The orchestra performs Bartok's Violin Concerto No. 2 with renowned soloist Gil Shaham on a program that also features Grieg's Suite No. 1 from Peer Gynt and Sibelius's Symphony No. 5 in E-flat Major, Op. 82.

Well-Strung, the popular string quartet that is also a boy band, launched their second album POPssical with a CD Release Concert at Feinstein's/54 Below. The show was a reworked version of their cabaret revue titled POPssical, and included new surprises mixed in with the familiar favorites. As always with the gifted group, the guys played their instruments with virtuosic integrity and provided stirring vocals, especially during melodious harmonies.

Norwegian Choir to Perform at St. Bartholomew's, 9/27

Solvguttene (Boys of Silver), the Norwegian Broadcasting Boys' Choir, will sing at St. Bart's  on Sunday, September 27, at 11 am. The choir, founded in 1940 and now celebrating their 75th anniversary, tours internationally every year and has sung in major concert halls and cathedrals on three continents. The choir comprises 80 boys aged 8 to 15 and 25 adult male singers.

BWW Reviews: The Ashley Bouder Project Performs at the Joyce Theater

On Saturday, August 8, 2015, The Ashley Bouder Project presented their first of two performances participating in the Joyce Theater's Ballet Festival. Joining Bouder, a principal of New York City Ballet, were 7 other New York City Ballet dancers. It is good to see accomplished ballet dancers given the opportunity to perform more contemporary styles. The performance, consisting of three pieces, was one hour, with no intermission.

North Carolina Symphony Music Director Grant Llewellyn will lead the orchestra, members of UNC-Chapel Hill's Carolina Choir, and an outstanding cast of actors, directed by University of North Carolina School of the Arts Dean of Drama Carl Forsman, in a theatrical / symphonic presentation of William Shakespeare's most popular comedy, A Midsummer Night's Dream. The performances will take place tonight, May 7, at 7:30 p.m., in Memorial Hall on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and again on Friday and Saturday, May 8-9, at 8 p.m., in Meymandi Concert Hall in downtown Raleigh.

New York City based string quartet Well-Strung returned to 54 Below on Friday, March 27, 2015. Performing to a sold-out house, the always charming and handsome performers delighted audiences with an encore engagement of their entertaining hit show POPssical. While reprising much of what they performed the last time I reviewed them in late October, the guys' charismatic set had a handful of new surprises.
