The New Orleans Theatre Association has announced that the new national tour of JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT, directed and choreographed by Tony Award-winner Andy Blankenbuehler, will play April 14 - 19, 2015 at the Saenger Theatre in New Orleans as part of the East Jefferson General Hospital Broadway in New Orleans 2014 - 2015 season.

On Monday January 19th, 2015 acclaimed songwriter Scott Alan will make his concert debut at 54 Below in celebration of his sixth studio album, 'Greatest Hits: Volume One.' The evening is being billed as an 'intimate night of storytelling feature many guests from the Broadway stage.'

The Kennedy Center presents Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat starring husband-and-wife team Diana DeGarmo as Narrator and Ace Young as Joseph from December 16, 2014 to January 4, 2015 in the Kennedy Center Opera House. Directed and choreographed by Tony Award-winner Andy Blankenbuehler, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor is the first collaboration of composer Andrew Lloyd Webber (Jesus Christ Superstar, Phantom of the Opera, Cats) and lyricist Tim Rice (Jesus Christ Superstar, Disney's The Lion King). The press opening night is Thursday, December 18, 2014 at 7:30 p.m.

Anyone familiar with the musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat would know that it's one part kitschy and one part pure entertainment. It's meant to be a fun and over the top Broadway hit -frankly, there's nothing wrong with the quality showmanship required for this particular musical. Almost no dialogue is merely spoken - audiences are constantly bombarded with songs that play out as if one right after the other is going to be a show stopper. It's what audiences expect. It's what has kept the otherwise unimpressive musical alive for so long. There is no Les Mis depth to keep audiences intrigued or the characterizations of Sweeney Todd to pull people to one character's defense over the other.

Joseph is once again traveling the country with his coat of many colors, so how does this reimagining of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat fare in the current musical landscape? The hardworking cast keeps the show lively and entertaining but the musical shows its age in structure and song.

Andrew Lloyd Webber's Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is a musical that lends itself to a wide range of production styles and interpretations. Having seen it done in a very minimalistic and simple style, the show can be very impactful and effective when done in that vein. At the far, far other end of the spectrum is the Broadway touring production currently in house at Providence Performing Arts Center. Anything but simple or minimalistic, the production turns Joseph into an overloaded, bloated, overwhelming spectacle of light and sound.
