Theatre Raymond Kabbaz (TRK) presents the Los Angeles premiere of Le Moche (The Ugly One), a satirical comedy that explores society's fixation on physical beauty, on Thursday, May 28 and Friday, May 29, 2015. Written by Marius von Mayenburg and performed by members of La Troupe du Theatre Raymond Kabbaz, the exhilarating Le Moche follows talented engineer Lette who struggles for recognition, thwarted by an ugly face. Admission is $15 for adults, $10 for students, and tickets are available here. The play runs for 75 minutes with no intermission. Performances start at 7:30pm and are in French without subtitles. Tarragon Theatre presents the English-language premiere of Abyss, written and translated by Tarragon's first-ever International playwright-in-residence Maria Milisavljevic and directed by Artistic Director Richard Rose. This poetic thriller about a missing woman premiered (as Brandung) at the Deutsches Theater Berlin, winning the prestigious 2013 Kleist Promotional Award for Young Dramatists. Abyss opens February 11 and runs to March 15, 2015 (previewing from February 3) in Tarragon's Extraspace, and marks the Canadian debut of German playwright Milisavljevic.

Dass es einmal das erfolgreichste deutschsprachige Musical werden wurde, durfte zur Urauffuhrung 1992 durch die Vereinigten Buhnen Wien niemand erwarten. Im Gegenteil, die Presse wehrte sich damals mit gefahrlicher Hame gegen diese neue, dunklere Sicht auf die osterreichische Nationalheilige.

Bei Produktionen von bekannten Musicals mit noch viel bekannteren Songs aus dem englischen Sprachraum stellt sich immer die Frage, wie solche in Deutschland umgesetzt werden sollen. Shows wie Mamma Mia entschieden sich fur eine komplette Übersetzung, die kurzliche Tour von West Side Story wurde komplett auf Englisch mit deutschen Übertiteln aufgefuhrt. Grease wahlte einen uberraschend gelungen Mittelweg mit deutschen Dialogen und Gesangstexten in Englisch. So konnte jeder die gekannten Hits (im Kopf) mitsingen und trotzdem der Handlung problemlos folgen. Eine solche Umsetzung ist sicher nicht bei jedem Musical moglich, aber bei Grease, wo die Song kaum zum Handlungsverlauf beitragen, funktioniert es hervorragend.
