Sarah Kirkland Snider’s first opera, HILDEGARD, continues its rolling world premiere at the PROTOTYPE Festival in New York City. The production follows earlier performances presented by Los Angeles Opera.
Snider’s first opera, HILDEGARD, for which she also wrote the libretto, will be presented in rolling world premieres by Los Angeles Opera (November 5-9, 2025) and PROTOTYPE Festival in New York (January 9-17, 2026), with subsequent performances at the Aspen Music Festival and School (Summer 2026, details TBA).

Based on the too-short life of Black Panther Party member Fred Hampton, the drama opens on the night of his assassination. 50 years on from his death, the play highlights Hampton's life and legacy, in particular the peaceful negotiations he led with Chicago street gangs and his efforts to end to police brutality. Messiah is a timely retelling of Hampton's story, considering the revolutionary potential of politically engaged young people and the will to make a difference, whatever the cost.
