Well, it's quite a relief to know that even after an earth shattering tragedy reduces the world to a mere (yet nevertheless functioning) shell of what it once was, the R train is still running. Not only does it continue to run, it now comes to serve as the setting of this post- apocalyptic play which provides as many discussions, controversies and philosophical arguments as there are stops on the route of this local train.

Amy Herzog's Pulitzer Prize nominated play 4000 Miles showcases a natural relationship between Vera and her 21-year-old grandson, Leo. Hiding out from family and life in general, Leo returns from a cross-country bike trip for an unplanned stay with Vera in her West Village apartment. As time passes, this feisty independent woman and her hippie grandson become a rather unlikely pair that laugh, learn and love together as one grows up and one grows old, while both grow to depend on the other.

Philadelphia Theatre Company kicks off its 2013-2014 season with the OBIE Award-winning 4,000 Miles by Amy Herzog on October 11-November 10 at the Suzanne Roberts Theatre (Broad and Lombard Streets). Directed by Mary B. Robinson, the ensemble cast features Beth Dixon, Leigha Kato, Davy Raphaely, and Shannon Sullivan.
