Portland Opera is thrilled to begin the 2018/19 season with Verdi's La Traviata. A crown jewel of grand opera, La Traviata tells the story of the brilliant and beautiful Parisian courtesan Violetta Valery as she falls in love with Alfredo Germont. Haunted by her reputation and illness, Violetta navigates sexual politics and confronts societal expectations as she braves a broken heart. Portland Opera will present four performances of La Traviata on November 2, 4 (matinee), 8, and 10 at the Keller Auditorium.

Last summer, critics lauded Dark Vanilla Jungle, a psychological drama on adolescent neglect and forced prostitution, as 'spectacular,' before it landed among the top three shows at the Tampa International Fringe Festival.
Appaloosa Music Festival, D.C.'s premier roots music festival will take place Labor Day Weekend (Aug. 31 - Sept. 2) at Skyline Ranch Resort in Front Royal, Virginia. The three-day fest is located just five miles from the entrance of Skyline Drive and George Washington National Forest, an hour drive from Washington D.C. The grounds provide the perfect backdrop for a roots music camping experience in the Shenandoah Valley.
Portland Opera is pleased to announce programming for the company's 55th season, scheduled to begin in November 2018. The season will launch with the recently announced "November classic" - Verdi's heartbreaking romance La Traviata - bringing opera back to Portland in the fall months. In March, Portland Opera will present Laura Kaminsky's brave and beautiful coming-of-age story, As One, where two voices, a mezzo-soprano and a baritone, share the role of the transgender heroine Hannah. The season will continue in the spring with the company's annual Big Night concert and a bright and vibrant production of Rossini's great Il Barbiere di Siviglia. In July, the company will present Mozart's La Finta Giardiniera for the first time, followed by the company premiere of Philip Glass's exploration of the nature of justice, In the Penal Colony, based on Franz Kafka's short story.
First Unity announces the launch of ARTS46/4. Named for First Unity's location on 46th Avenue and 4th Street North in St. Petersburg, ARTS46/4 is an independent-yet-integrated venue / producing partner to bridge the Arts community with First Unity Spiritual Campus. In April, ARTS46/4 will kick-off with a five month arts initiative, which includes both a dedicated Arts component in all the Sunday services, and producing a series of public special events featuring well-known members of Tampa Bay's thriving Arts community.

Creative Loafing, Tampa Bay's alternative newsweekly, announced the hiring of a new Arts & Entertainment Editor today. Cathy Salustri, a frequent contributor to CL, was a longtime senior writer at the Gabber Newspaper in Gulfport, and has written for USA Today, Visit Florida, regional magazines and local press. Over the past year she has finished two books, created programming for the Gulfport Historical Society, and spoken across the state about Florida history and culture.
