Recently, David Bernard, the Park Avenue Chamber Symphony's music director, sat down with Stanley Drucker to discuss his illustrious career, Mozart and life after 60 years with the New York Philharmonic.

The Massapequa Philharmonic will begin its 2014-2015 season with a performance led by guest conductor David Bernard at Berner Auditorium in Massapequa on Saturday October 18 at 8 pm. The program will feature Tchaikovsky's passionate and electrifying Symphony No. 4, Mozart's sublime Overture to the Magic Flute and Dvorak's endearing Violin Concerto featuring violinist Anna Lee. "It is a thrill to collaborate with the Massapequa Philharmonic and Anna Lee on the orchestra's opening concert," says guest conductor David Bernard. "Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4 scales human emotion from the depths of loneliness and longing up through triumphant elation. One minute the work tugs at your heart strings and then next sends you to the highest heights with a celebration of blinding brilliance. And Anna Lee will enrapture the audience with her artistry in the Dvorak Violin Concerto. It is an honor to share this great music with the people of Massapequa."

From epic rock opera to sexy shadow puppetry, 2014's ANT Fest heats up Ars Nova this summer with four weeks of comedy, music, theater and a fusion of all three you won't see anywhere else.

New York City has lots of big attractions that people around the world are well aware of. But New York City also has smaller gems that don't get the same attention but still shine just as brightly. The Park Avenue Chamber Symphony is one such gem. Last Sunday afternoon, this superb ensemble led ably by Maestro David Bernard delivered an impressive performance of Beethoven's Symphony No. 2, which many, more well-known and well-funded, orchestras would be jealous of. Maestro Bernard, who worked without benefit of a score, brought a brilliant and bright quality to the first Allegro movement. The Larghetto that followed was mannered and precisely shaped. The Scherzo, usually performed as a light and merry dance, felt a bit wayward, as the playing got a bit loose. But a strong, majestic and fiery Finale brought the first half to a satisfying conclusion. The Second Symphony was composed during the summer and fall of 1802 and it signaled the end of Beethoven's 'early period.' For the composer, this was a time of great despair because he was finally realizing that his deafness could not be cured and would indeed be a permanent affliction. That despair is deeply engrained in the work, and the Park Avenue Chamber Symphony dug deep and tapped into that despair and communicated it amiably to the audience.
