RAGTIME is such an underrated piece of art. Although written in 1996 and staged for Broadway in 1998, it is almost prophetic in its reflection of the social unrest, racism and immigration sanctions prevalent in our world today. Based on the 1975 novel by E. L. Doctorow, with a book by Terrence McNally, music by Stephen Flaherty and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, RAGTIME is as relevant today as it was when first conceived. Its timelessness is a credit to its brilliant and perceptive writing, albeit a sad commentary of our present society which has not learned from its past and has not progressed much in civility or compassion.

The original Broadway production was directed by Frank Galati, who received a Tony nomination for his work and is an Associate Artist at Asolo Rep. It was indeed a weekend of love at the Patchogue Theatre honoring the fiftieth anniversary of the iconic musical, Hair. To commemorate, the gorgeous Long Island venue put together a thrilling - and abbreviated - concert version of the Tony winner featuring top talent from Broadway and beyond for a stellar celebration brilliantly directed and conducted by Emmy, Grammy, and Tony winner John McDaniel. Set in the late 1960s/early 19070's, the story follows a "tribe" of politically active hippies promoting community and love during the Vietnam Era - one of the many themes in this story.
Patchogue Theatre will be producing a full concert version of the exciting, Broadway altering and Tony, Drama Desk and Grammy-winning Musical 'HAIR'. Directed by the Emmy, Grammy, and Tony-winning John McDaniel and starring Broadway and American Idol's Ace Young and Diana DeGarmo, along with a cast of young Broadway and national touring talent. Dear Readers, it's been quite a year and, hopefully, we've come through it unscathed. God knows we've needed some shows to help us escape and others to make us think. But through it all we've had several shows that have proven to shine as some of the best of the year. Out of all the shows I was fortunate enough to see this year, I've selected a few that stood out. Here are those stand outs, a few honorable mentions and a few special mentions about which I just couldn't help myself but to mention in their own special way.
