Just last night the cast of Amelie, a new musical based on the beloved five-time Oscar-nominated film, journeyed halfway (x2) to Rockefeller Center to celebrate opening night on Broadway. Broadway World takes you inside the festivities below!

Producers just announced the Original Broadway Cast Recording of the much anticipated AME?LIE, A NEW MUSICAL, by a new imprint of the Warner Music Group. The original Broadway cast recording will be available for pre-order starting Thursday, March 9, 2017, and will be released on Friday, May 19, 2017 (online) and Friday, June 9, 2017 (in stores). The American Theatre Wing announced today that the 2017 Jonathan Larson Grants recipients are Ben Bonnema (book, music and lyrics), Maggie-Kate Coleman & Erato A. Kremmyda (music and lyrics), Ty Defoe & Tidtaya Sinutoke (book, music and lyrics), and Michael R. Jackson (book, music and lyrics).

Amelie A New Musical, based on the 2001 French film Amelie, has a magical charm that reminds one of Matilda, at least in the beginning scenes. We meet the young Amelie (Savvy Crawford) who enters through a picture frame (see photo at left) and proceeds to tell her story, quite sad in fact, for she is saddled with a heart condition and difficult parents who keep her isolated and unhappy. Her mother meets a tragic, almost freakish demise and Amelie is brought up by her father who lives in a world of his own. As she matures, she realizes her lot in life will be to make other people happy. Now onstage at the Ahmanson Theatre through January 15, Amelie A New Musical has some wonderfully imaginative moments and a sparkling cast under the fast-paced direction of Pam MacKinnon.

As 2017 kicks off, Broadway will soon see a host of new and returning musicals, headlined and helmed by some of the stage's best. From the long-awaited return of MISS SAIGON to Bette Midler's arrival as Dolly Levi, there's plenty to be excited about as the 2016-17 theatre season ramps up.

Producers announced today that AMELIE, A NEW MUSICAL will begin performances on Broadway on Thursday, March 9, 2017 at the Walter Kerr Theatre (219 W 48th Street) and officially open Monday, April 3, 2017, following a limited engagement at Center Theatre Group's Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles (December 4, 2016 - January 15, 2017). The company will be led by Tony Award nominee Phillipa Soo and Adam Chanler-Berat, following the Los Angeles engagement.
