Poet, playwright, and songwriter Cornelius Eady will deliver a talk on the white gaze and the Black body as part of Gibney Center's Spring 2022 Deeper Lecture Series.

Gibney has announced Gibney Center’s spring 2022 season curated by Eva Yaa Asantewaa, Senior Director of Curation and Editorial Director. Continuing the theme “Rising Up” from last fall, the season features performances by acclaimed and emerging artists; discussion and lecture series; and works-in-process programs.

On November 19 at 7:00 PM, Woodie King, Jr.'s New Federal Theatre will present its 2021 Poetry Jam, 'She Speaks: Love, Resilience, Revolution,' a virtual evening of poetry featuring Sasa Aakil, Gha'il Rhodes Benjamin, Bayan Founas (Bayan the Poet), Angela Jackson, jessica Care moore and Dionne Tenhue (aka Luna the Poet).

Vineyard Theatre has announced the company’s second original cast benefit reading, reuniting renowned actors Joe Morton (“Scandal”) and Sally Murphy (August: Osage County) for Oppenheimer Award-winning playwright and poet Cornelius Eady’s (Vineyard’s You Don’t Miss The Water) play, Brutal Imagination.

Today PEN America announced the major career achievement honors to be presented at the 2020 PEN America Literary Awards.

The Cohen New Works Festival, presented by the Department of Theatre and Dance at The University of Texas at Austin, returns in a biennial, five-day festival celebrating new, student-created work April 15-19, 2019 on the university campus. The 2019 Festival will present 30 new works, including works of dance, theatre, new plays, installations and site-specific performance work.

Alex Poots, Artistic Director and CEO of The Shed, today announced that 52 emerging artists and collectives living or working in New York City have been commissioned to create new work as part of The Shed's inaugural Open Call program. Developed specifically for New York City artists who have not yet had opportunities to create new work with full support from a large cultural institution, Open Call is integral to The Shed's vision: to develop and present the full spectrum of performing arts, visual arts, and pop culture, under one roof, for all audiences. Open Call debuts in The Shed's 2019 season, with works continuing to be presented into 2020.

Peak Performances kicks off its 2018-19 season with the world premiere of Hatuey: Memory of Fire, a rousing Afro-Cuban-Yiddish opera performed in English, Yiddish and Spanish, with music by Frank London, libretto by Elise Thoron, direction by Mary Birnbaum, and choreography by Maija Garcia.

Writer/performer Kirya Yvonne Traber presents a theatrical mixtape at JACK, sharing songs of necessity and stories of longing. For this mix of concert and theater piece, Traber is backed by a four-piece band, with musical arrangements by Emma Alabaster. Featured musicians include Kala Brame (percussion), Alex Marcelo (piano), Emma Alabaster (bass), and Gwen Laster (viola), with a scenic installation by Jacqui Martinez and lighting design by Marika Kent. What We Needed features original music and text by Traber, and was created, in part, through the Lincoln Center Education Community Artist in Residence Program.

Her writing has appeared in publications such as The Brooklyn Rail, The Sydney Morning Herald, The Understanding Between Foxes and Light, A Minor, Westerly, Mascara Literary Review, The Legendary, Transtierros (translated into Spanish), Gargoyle 62, LiveMag! 12 and Three Rooms Press MAINTENANT 9. She currently teaches writing at BMCC. Robert Gibbons grew up in Belle Glade, Florida, the eldest of five children, and earned a B.S. in History from Florida A&M. In 2007, he moved to New York City in search of his muse, Langston Hughes. Gibbons has studied with such master poets as Cornelius Eady, Marilyn Nelson, Klmiko Hahn, and Nathalie Handal, and has participated in workshops at Cave Canem and the 92Y. His work has been published in numerous anthologies including The Brownstone Poets Anthology, Dinner with the Muse (Ra Rays Press), The Cartier Street Review, Nomad's Choir, and Maintenant 6: A Journal of Contemporary Dada Art & Literature (Three Rooms Press). His poetry may also be heard on the CD Brain Ampin' (Logo Chrysalis Productions). Yi Wu is a Chinese-born poet who calls New York his home after years of drifting along the East Coast. He has been scribbling verses since middle school and was drawn at the time to the poetry's infinite potential for both elegance and transgression. His work has appeared in Uppagus, New Verse News and Clockwise Cat, and his collection A Fistful of Moss and Poppy Seeds was released in February 2016.
