Feeling the urge to let your imagination run wild, your spirit to soar or to just leave the world in which you live and go on an adventure? Sounds like a trip to the theater is in order! Luckily, companies all over the Volunteer State have been hard at work, creating new productions to transform and to transport, shows that will entertain you this summer. That's where THE NASHVILLE THEATER CALENDAR comes in handy: Peruse our listings every week to find out what shows you should see!

Director Chris McLaurin makes a particularly auspicious debut at the helm of his rollicking - and beautifully sung and winningly staged - production of Gilbert and Sullivan's classic The Pirates of Penzance, now playing at Murfreesboro's Center for the Arts through August 27. Charming and engaging, McLaurin's Pirates hews closely to the comic opera's original production (the only one of Gilbert and Sullivan's works to actually have its initial staging on Broadway - in 1879), testament to the libretto's timelessness and its refreshingly contemporary humor.

To live like a legend... sometimes you have to fight like a bitch. The country is at war, and the Senate cannot keep the peace within its own walls--- let alone on the battlefield. Enter Coriolanus: the country's most famous badass warrior. She returns home to face the greatest battle yet: to win the love of the people & run for office--- or face the dangerous consequences of defying society's expectations. CORIOLANUS, the rarely produced play by William Shakespeare about politics, power, and pride, is packed with daring physical combat and deliciously vicious language.

Miss Mona runs the Chicken Ranch, a brothel with a long history in a small Texas town. The locals have a good relationship with the institution, and Mona is respected in the community. The Sheriff, Ed Earl Dodd, also looks out for the Chicken Ranch due to his past with Miss Mona. However, when pious reporter Melvin Thorpe exposes the brothel, outside interests want it shut down, putting the governor in a tough spot.  Performances August 10-12, 2017 at 8pm and August 13th at 3:00 pm. A bright and brand new production for STAGES St. Louis, 9 to 5, The Musical has audiences laughing, crying, and cheering the exploits of Violet, Judy, and Doralee. Based on the seminal 1980 hit movie starring Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, and Dolly Parton, this hilarious musical romp explores friendship and revenge while its heroines attempt to break the glass ceiling and take control of the company that has always kept them down. The current production of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas now performing at The Merry - Go - Round Playhouse in Auburn, New York brings comedy, dancing, a lot of attitude, and very little clothing. Director and choreographer Parker Esse brings a rowdy, toe-tapping, and carefree good time with his high energy cast.

Pony World's world premiere 'American Archipelago' is a collaborative examination of American culture and values. Written by Holly Arsenault, Kelleen C. Blanchard, Tre Calhoun, Vincent Delaney, Brendan Healy, Maggie Lee, Sara Porkalob, and Seayoung Yim, 'American Archipelago' feels more like an incubator than a melting pot. Eight folks from different communities live side-by-side in a semi-symbolic neighborhood called 'The United States of America.' While this campy fever-dream succeeds as a black comedy, what's missing from this conceptual piece is a fresh concept.

Possum Point Players have a cast of 41, and ticket sales have begun for an early fall production of "Disney's Beauty and the Beast." With shows scheduled for Oct. 6, 7, 8, 13, 14 and 15, Director Jim Hartzell of Georgetown said ticket purchases are already steady.

A bright and brand new production for STAGES St. Louis, Dolly Parton's smash hit 9 to 5, The Musical makes its STAGES debut at the Robert G. Reim Theatre in Kirkwood. Join three female coworkers in the Rolodex era as they explore friendship and revenge. You will laugh, cry, and ultimately cheer their exploits as they discover the joys of working 9 to 5. This show will run from July 21st through August 20th.

The Department of Theater at Brooklyn College is one of New York City's outstanding institutions in the training of theater artists. With the assistance of a generous grant from the Tow Foundation, the Department of Theater in conjunction with the MFA Playwriting Program, headed by co-coordinators Mac Wellman and Erin Courtney, will present the annual Weasel Festival, hosted by The Public Theater.

MainStage Irving-Las Colinas will present Joseph Fields and Jerome Chodorov's 1940s comedy MY SISTEREILEEN. Directed by Dave Schmidt, the production runs July 21 through August 5, 2017, at the Irving Arts Center's Dupree Theater (3333 N. MacArthur Blvd., Irving, TX 75062).
