A common thing performers will say when asked about why they love theatre is that it's a 'great outlet' for them. But what does that mean? What is an outlet and how do we find it in art?

Fandom-ism isn't a one-way street, for the most part at least. One fandom usually bleeds into another one, and then another one, and soon enough you're a fan of more things than you originally expected.

It is not often that Kansas City audiences are fortunate enough to experience the North American premiere of a new British play in our own backyard. It is even less frequent that the playwright makes the monumental leap across the pond to share notes with the cast and production staff. Such is the case with British playwright, author, and journalist Jennifer Selway. The new production of her play, a British farce called “CONDO-MONIUM,” at Overland Park’s New Theatre & Restaurant for an extended run.

“I haven’t laughed so much in my life,” the audience member me behind remarked as curtains drew to a close. A fellow patron to my right turned around and declared, “Neither have I!” The two instantly bonded over how much they loved SORDID LIVES, a self-proclaimed “black comedy about white trash” - the latest production from Encore! Performing Arts.

Something I have said many times is that I wish audience members would fully realize the amount of work and the amount of people it takes to put on a production. The things I have heard in theatre lobbies are both scary and laughable at the same time. Things like 'Oh, I want a chance to crash that chandelier. It's just one button!' or 'Wow, that didn't look hard at all. I could do that easily'. Well folks, working in theatre is not an easy profession. It comes with lots of stress and long days but if you have the drive and passion, it can be very fulfilling.

I could only imagine what a magic show would consist of... perhaps a few white rabbits, a deck of cards, and a fabulous dancer that gets cut in half. I went to the show with all these images in my mind, but due to a lack of experience, I ultimately had no expectations. To say that CHAMPIONS OF MAGIC exceeded what I was imagining is an understatement.

Cirque du Soleil’s Corteo lands at the Microsoft Theatre March 23, 2023. Corteo, usually a somber procession (translated from ‘cortege’ in Italian) receives a colorful, joyous make-over as only Cirque de Soleil can do, with an international cast of clowns, acrobats, contortionists and musicians. I got the chance to get some behind-the-scenes tidbits from Corteo’s vocalist Sofia Montano.
