BWW Review: Anoka's Lyric Arts Gifts Audiences Elegant and Evocative EVITA

Was Eva Peron a saint or sinner, or perhaps merely an incredibly determined woman who changed the face of Argentinian politics? In an elegant stage presentation of the award winning Evita, Lyric Arts on the Main Street Stage delivered a theatrical jewel to their audiences this past weekend. Andrew Lloyd Webber's music and Tim Rice's book and lyrics garnered Drama Desk and Tony Awards to became the first British musical to win the prestigious award of Best Musical in 1979. Inspiration for the production came from Mary Martin's biography 'Evita: The Women with the Whip' and forged the basis for the Webber/Rice collaboration with contemporary themes that resonate in the 21st century. Political upheaval in South America and other world regimes rock the globe in current news headlines, where revisiting Evita gives audiences a forum to contemplate these cultural concerns.

BWW Review: EL CORONEL NO TIENE QUIEN LE ESCRIBA at Harlem Stage

Based on a novella by Nobel Prize winner Gabriel Garcia Marquez, El Coronel No Tiene Quien Le Escriba is being presented in Spanish (with English supertitles) by Repertorio Español. A veteran of a Columbian civil war, the Colonel lives with his wife in a small village under martial law. They are impoverished and very hungry. Every Friday he waits for the postmaster. A letter is supposed to arrive with his pension from the war. No mail has arrived for fifteen years, hence the story's title which translates as 'No One Writes to the Colonel.'

CROSSING MNISOSE To Open At The Armory

Mary Kathryn Nagle's world premiere play Crossing Mnisose weaves together Sacajawea's story with that of the contemporary fight to protect the Mnisose (what Europeans named the Missouri River) from the Dakota Access Pipeline. As in her celebrated playsManahatta and Sovereignty, Nagle draws a clear, urgent line between the past and the present. Nagle's frequent collaborator Molly Smith (Sovereignty at Arena Stage) will direct.

BWW Review: Get a CLUE at Midland University Theatre

CLUE is one of the most confusing, crazy, wacky shows I've seen yet. Midland University Performing Arts delivered an evening of laughs with Jonathan Lynn's murder mystery based on the 1985 film of the same name. The film was based on the classic board game Clue, which originated in 1949 under the name 'Cluedo' by Englishman Anthony E. Pratt. CLUE was also adapted as a musical Off Broadway in 1996 by Peter DePietro. You just can't kill this thing.

BWW Review: MY FAIR LADY at Theatre Tulsa

Near the end of My Fair Lady, the transformed heroine Eliza Doolittle shares an insight about her experience: 'The difference between a lady and a flower girl is not how she behaves, but how she is treated.' The Theatre Tulsa production that just finished its 2-week run at the Performing Arts Center takes this idea one step further. In their interpretation of My Fair Lady, the difference between a lady and a flower girl also has to do with how she is empowered to treat others and advocate for herself.
