Festival d'Aix-en-Provence Announces 2014 Season Highlights, Begins Today

The 66th season of the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence, under the leadership of General Manager Bernard Foccroulle, will present the world premiere productions of operas by Handel and Rossini, a multi-media version of Schubert's Winterreise with video by the award-winning South African artist William Kentridge, as well as Trauernacht, a unique staging of Bach's sacred cantatas by British director Katie Mitchell. Also on the roster is a new Festival production of Die Zauberflote, directed by Complicite's Artistic Director Simon McBurney. In celebration of the 250th anniversary of Rameau's death, a concert version of the composer's Les Boreades, featuring young singers selected by the Academie Europeenne de Musique, will round out the Festival's major vocal presentations.

Met Museum Presents and Gotham Chamber Opera presents a double bill co-produced with and staged at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, consisting of Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda by Monteverdi, and a newly commissioned work, I Have No Stories to Tell You, by Gotham Chamber Opera Composer-In-Residence Lembit Beecher, tonight, February 26 and tomorrow, February 27, 2014 at 7pm at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1000 Fifth Avenue (at 82nd Street), NYC.

Festival d'Aix-en-Provence Announces 66th Season - Handel, Mozart & More, 7/2-24

The 66th annual Festival d'Aix-en-Provence, under the leadership of General Manager Bernard Foccroulle, will present four world premieres in 2014: new opera productions of Handel's Ariodante and Rossini's Il Turco in Italia, plus Katie Mitchell's staging of Bach cantatas, Trauernacht, and William Kentridge's multi-media version of Schubert's iconic song cycle, Winterreise. Also featured in the coming season is a new Festival production of Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, a concert version of Rameau's Les Boréades, and a selection of orchestral concerts, recitals, and chamber music performances. In addition, the 17th annual European Academy of Music will offer more than 60 events and 250 young artists. From July 2 to 24, 2014, all events unfold in eight extraordinary venues, many of them open air, in and around the picturesque city of Aix-en-Provence.

Gotham Chamber Opera Now Accepting Applications for Catherine Doctorow Prize for Music

Gotham Chamber Opera and the Jarvis & Constance Doctorow Family Foundation announce the inaugural cycle of the Catherine Doctorow Prize for Music, a competitive prize awarded to a composer to support the creation of a new work for voice and chamber ensemble. Gotham Chamber Opera Announces Fourth Round of Composer in Residence Program

Gotham Chamber Opera, in collaboration with Opera Philadelphia and Music-Theatre Group in New York, is proud to offer a fourth track in the nation's first comprehensive, operatic Composer in Residence program. Funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the program provides professional development opportunities for today's most promising opera composers, selected on a competitive basis. Applications are being accepted through January 31, 2014.

Little Opera Theatre of NY to Present Rossini's OPPORTUNITY MAKES THE THIEF at 59E59 Theaters, 2/22-3/2

The Little Opera Theatre of NY announces its Winter 2014 production of Gioachino Rossini's one-act rarity, Opportunity Makes the Thief (L'occasione fa il ladro, ossia Il cambio della valigia ). Eight performances will be presented from February 22 through March 2, 2014 at 59E59 Theaters (59 East 59th Street, between Park and Madison Avenues). Performance times are 8:15 pm for Fridays and Saturdays, including February 22, February 28, and March 1; 7:15 pm for Tuesday-Thursday performances, including February 25, 26, 27, and 3:15 pm for two Sunday matinees, February 23, and March 2. Final Day for NYC Opera to Raise Funds; $2 Million of $7 Million

The Times reports that City Opera's board voted to start bankruptcy proceedings next week if it fails to raise $7 million by Monday. The opera will most likely not meet that goal after only raising about $1.5 million since it first made an urgent appeal for the $7 million this month.
