BWW Review: A CHRISTMAS CAROL at Open Stage Of Harrisburg

The 1843 Charles Dickens novel A Christmas Carol is a familiar tale. Each holiday season A Christmas Carol can be found in one of its over 130 adaptations on the screen or on the stage. As the stress of the holiday season grows, it is not unusual to hear someone utter the words made famous by Ebenezer Scrooge-Bah! Humbug! No matter what version of the classic tale we see, however, the story reminds us that the true spirit of the holiday season is one of compassion, kindness, forgiveness, charity, love, and hope. A Christmas Carol opened for the 19th year at Open Stage of Harrisburg on December 1st.

BWW Feature: Holiday Favorite, A Christmas Carol, Opens at Open Stage of Harrisburg on December 1st

From Mickey's Christmas Carol with Scrooge McDuck to the Muppet Christmas Carol, the 1843 Charles Dickens novel A Christmas Carol has been adapted over 130 times. The story of Ebenezer Scrooge, a miser who seems to have a heart of stone, has captured the imaginations of generations of book readers, movie-goers, and theatre-lovers. This beloved classic criticizes a society that condemns and ignores the poor. As Scrooge is confronted with images of his life and the life of his employee Bob Cratchit through the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come, he comes to see the error of his ways. In the end, Scrooge becomes a kinder, more generous, and more compassionate man.

Considered a landmark celebration of the American Musical, A Chorus Line follows the lives of 17 Broadway dancers vying for a spot 'on the line.' Zach, a driven director/choreographer at the helm of a suspenseful audition, will stop at nothing to assemble an unforgettable chorus, no matter the price. With music by Oscar and Tony winning Marvin Hamlisch, A Chorus Line defines glittering promise, unwavering determination and stakes as high as the kickline itself. This is one Muny 'singular sensation' you won't want to miss!

Review Roundup: THE UNSINKABLE MOLLY BROWN at The Muny

Hannibal Missouri's own brash and beguiling Molly Brown shines in this exhilarating adaptation of Meredith Willson's 1960 musical. Her rags-to-riches story sparkles with a new book by Dick Scanlan (Thoroughly Modern Millie), and new songs from the Meredith Willson songbook.

BWW Review: 1984 is Doubleplusungood at Obsidian Theater

It's certainly a relevant piece for our time, and I applaud the intention of bringing it to life in this era of political debate and mistrust of the media. But if you're going to dig this one up then have the nerve to make it feel dangerously close to the outside world.

1984 Brings Dystopia to Obsidian Theater

Obsidian Theater in association with SRO Productions will stage 1984 this June at Obsidian Theater, 3522 White Oak Drive Houston, TX 77007.  1984 is an adaptation by Michael Gene Sullivan of George Orwell's masterpiece novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four.   The play, which takes place in a dystopian future, revolves around the protagonist Winston Smith and his resistance to Big Brother, the Inner Party and its omnipresent government driven by surveillance, propaganda, and manipulation.
