The Sheen Center for Thought & Culture (18 Bleecker Street) has announced the Spring programming of the 2016-2017 season. Featuring a varied array of thought-provoking theater, film, music, art, and discourse, The Sheen Center delves deeper into its many signature series, and for the first time will produce a mainstage theatrical production: The New York premiere of Bill Cain's acclaimed play, 9 Circles.

What happens when mayors meet? We found out over the weekend when NYC's Mayor Bill de Blasio met another mayor... well, sort of. De Blasio attended a recent performance of Berkshire Theatre Group (BTG)'s sold-out production of Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick's Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning musical Fiorello!, which just transferred to Off-Broadway's East 13th Street Theater (136 East 13th Street, between 3rd and 4th Avenues). Mayor Bill de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray visited the all-female, multi-ethnic, history-making cast of Eclipsed backstage after Friday's performance at the John Golden Theatre on Broadway. They asked the actors how they decompress after performing. Lupita Nyong 'o described how they take time to commune together before every performance and then again, after the show. The Public Theater Partners with UN Women for First HeForShe Arts Week

The Public Theater announced today that it is proud to serve as the inaugural theatrical partner with HeForShe, the movement for gender equality from UN Women, in partnership with the City of New York. The first HeForShe Arts Week in support of global gender equality will run March 8-15, 2016 in New York, to coincide with International Women's Day observed globally on March 8th.

Based on the smash hit 2003 film, SCHOOL OF ROCK - THE MUSICAL follows Dewey Finn, a failed wannabe rock star who decides to earn a few extra bucks by posing as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school. Completely disinterested in academic work, Dewey decides to create his own curriculum, turning his class into a guitar-shredding, bass-slapping, mind-blowing rock band. 2014 Bessie Award Winners Announced

The New York Dance and Performance Awards (The Bessies), NYC's premier dance awards honoring outstanding creative work in the field, announced tonight the complete list of 2013-14 season award recipients. The Bessies, produced in partnership with Dance/NYC, were held at the legendary Apollo Theater at 7:30 p.m., following red carpet interviews and photographs with the nominees in attendance. NYC First Lady Chirlane McCray gave opening remarks, and Lisa Kron, whose hit musical Fun Home will make its Broadway debut this year, hosted the evening.

In 1994, Bette Midler returned to New York after nearly 20 years in Los Angeles, and started the New York Restoration Project, a non-profit organization devoted to bringing abandoned and neglected parks, gardens, and open spaces in all five boroughs back to life. NYRP includes the beautiful New Leaf Cafe in Fort Tryon Park as part of its success, and is committed to helping restore parks and gardens devastated by Hurricane Sandy. The 2014 Sackler Center First Award honors Anita F. Hill for Speaking Truth to Power. The awards ceremony takes place at the Brooklyn Museum on Thursday, June 5, from 6 to 9 p.m. This annual award celebrates women who have broken gender barriers and made remarkable contributions in their fields, and will be presented to Hill by Museum Trustee Elizabeth A. Sackler and Gloria Steinem, with First Lady of New York City Chirlane McCray, Honorary Chair of the event.
