Washington Stage Guild Presents GULF DRIVE VIEWWashington Stage Guild Presents GULF DRIVE VIEW
by BWW News Desk - Jan 6, 2019

The Washington Stage Guild presents the third and final play in Arlene Hutton's romantic trilogy portraying married life in the mid-20th Century. Gulf View Drive explores the lives of Raleigh and May Brummett, who met by chance during World War II, married in haste and faced the challenges of finding their own way. It is now 1953 and Raleigh's published stories have gained success. But success brings new challenges as both mothers-in-law and a sister descend on the couple. Along the way, each adjusts to the meaning of family life in his or her own way and faces an America beginning to confront its racial divide. The play opens on Thursday, January 17 and will run through Sunday, February 10, 2019. Press performance will be on Sunday, January 20 at 2:30 pm. A special talkback with playwright Arlene Hutton is scheduled immediately following this performance. (more...)

BWW Review: Bootleg Shakespeare HENRY VI, PART 3 at Taffety Punk is Theater Without a NetBWW Review: Bootleg Shakespeare HENRY VI, PART 3 at Taffety Punk is Theater Without a Net
by Pamela Roberts - Jul 19, 2018

Taffety Punk Theatre Company's Bootleg Shakespeare production HENRY VI, PART 3 is performance without a net - exciting, dangerous, riveting, and raw. Bootleg Shakespeare isn't designed to be polished or perfect, it's designed to be fresh and immediate. And it delivered. What's more amazing? The actors arrived at 10:00 am Monday with roles assigned and lines memorized. That's it. Working together under the direction of Taffety Punk Artistic Director Marcus Kyd, over the next few hours the 32 actors DIY'ed the production and were on stage in front of an audience at 7:30 pm. There were minimal props, lights, and costumes-but the red and white paper lapel flowers told us exactly what we needed to know when every epic battle scene and every word of Shakespeare's text was performed. BWW Review: DON JUAN at Taffety Punk Theatre CompanyBWW Review: DON JUAN at Taffety Punk Theatre Company
by Elliot Lanes - Apr 10, 2018

The company that makes great theater for everyone is at it again. Taffety Punk Theatre Company's mission is, and always will be, to put out a good product while making it affordable for everyone. Tickets are $15 and there are also “pay what you can” performances. The current production, well worth the ticket price and then some, is a knockout version of Moliere's tale of the great lover Don Juan. It stars the superb DC actress Tonya Beckman in what, so far, is the role of her career. (more...)

BWW Review: Quotidian's THE LADY WITH THE LITTLE DOG a Gorgeous Chamber Piece
by Andrew White - Jul 25, 2016

The Lady with the Little Dog is one of Chekhov's most beloved short stories, and it is especially gratifying to see that Director/Designer Stephanie Mumford has taken The Lady with the Little Dog and created an intimate one-hour visit to late 19th-century Russia. Beginning in an idyllic resort on the Black Sea, Mumford uses live music from the period - performed impeccably by Christine Khrarazian, accompanied by pianist Zachary Roberts-and a sequence of film footage and projections of seascapes by the Russian artist Aivazovsky to bring us into Chekhov's world.
