BWW Review: A CHRISTMAS CAROL at Geva Theatre

It's that time of year again. Time for cookies and eggnog, wrapping presents and hanging mistletoe, the relentless barrage of 'Dominic the Donkey' and 'Santa, Baby'. Love them or hate them, the Christmas season is a time for traditions, and one tradition that helps nullify the dredge of office holiday parties and Eastview Mall pandemonium is one that all of us Rochesterians treasure: A Christmas Carol at Geva Theatre, which first premiered on the theatre's Wilson Mainstage in 2010.

A CHRISTMAS CAROL Comes To Temple Theater 12/8

Experience 'A Christmas Carol'as you never have before. Peter Battis becomes Charles Dickens as Dickens tells his classic tale of redemption. Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was already a famous and beloved author when he stepped onto a London stage in 1858 to read excerpts from his own works. He quickly proved himself to be a skilled performer who could move an audience to tears or laughter, and his presentations were the hottest ticket of their day. Billed as 'Public Readings', they were actually memorized one-man shows in which the author played all the parts.

BWW Review: THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD Misses a Lot of Opportunities But Still Highly Entertaining

THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD (or, as it is sometimes called, the much shorter, 'Drood') is a 1985 musical based on Charles Dickens unfinished novel The Mystery of Edwin Drood. Written entirely by Rupert Holmes, it was the first Broadway musical with multiple endings determined by the audience. Holmes received Tony Awards for Best Book and Best Original Score. The production won five Tony Awards out of eleven nominations, including Best Musical. The musical is derived from both Dickens' final unfinished novel and British pantomime and music hall traditions that reached the height of their popularity in the years following Dickens' death. Produced originally by Austin Playhouse in 2005, it was nominated for six B. Iden Payne awards including the winner of Best Director for Musical Theatre (Don Toner). Jill Blackwood, Rick Roemer, and Jacqui Cross reprise their roles from that 2005 production.

BWW Review: OLIVER! at QUINTESSENCE THEATRE GROUP Will Have You Saying 'Please Sir, I Want Some More'

After a hard day's labor in a parish workhouse for children, a nine-year-old orphan named Oliver asks for a second serving of gruel. The workhouse master, annoyed by Oliver's impertinence, sells him into an apprenticeship with a drunken undertaker and his abusive wife. Fearing for his life, the boy escapes to London, where he falls in with the Artful Dodger and a band of juvenile pickpockets led by the criminal Fagin. Oliver discovers heroes and villains in all manner of strange places as he learns how to survive and thrive on the streets of the city. Including such favorite songs as "Food, Glorious Food," "Consider Yourself," and "You've Got to Pick a Pocket or Two," Lionel Bart's adaptation of Charles Dickens' social satire of 19th-century London remains a cherished musical for all ages.

BWW Review: A CHRISTMAS CAROL, Old Vic

If you are struggling to get into the festive spirit this year, a visit to London's Old Vic theatre is highly recommended. After the roaring success of Jack Thorne's charming adaptation of Charles Dickens' yuletide classic last year, the decision to stage A Christmas Carol again is as warm and welcoming as a hug from St Nicholas himself.

BWW Review: SCROOGE - A CHRISTMAS CAROL at Lillestrøm Kutursenter

From the moment you enter the small theatre you are surrounded by the Victorian streets of London. The impressive set stretches into the auditorium on both sides. It is easy to be immersed in the old streets of London. The Norwegian penned version of 'Scrooge - A Christmas Carol' is a most welcomed addition to adaptations of this classic tale.

BWW Review: A CHRISTMAS CAROL Kicks Off the Holiday Season at Sacramento Theatre Company

The holiday season is a time when we all reflect upon the past year. The good, the bad, and everything in between comes up for dissection as we are influenced to improve in the new year. No tale conveys this idea more clearly than Charles Dickens' classic, A Christmas Carol. Sacramento Theatre Company presents an adaptation by Richard Hellesen and David DeBerry that is more enjoyable each subsequent year you see it.

Photo Flash: First Look at SCROOGE IN ROUGE At OB Playhouse & Theatre Company

Directed by Manny Bejarano featuring choreography by Michael Mizerany and music direction by William Ah Sing, this quick-change, cross-dressing version of the Charles Dickens classic is set in a Victorian music hall. The Royal Music Hall Twenty-Member Variety Players are beset with a widespread case of food poisoning. This leaves only three surviving members to soldier on through a performance of A Christmas Carol. The undaunted trio gamely face missed cues, ill-fitting costumes, and solving the problem of having no one to play Tiny Tim. Done in the style of British Music Hall, SCROOGE IN ROUGE abounds in bad puns, bawdy malapropisms, naughty double-entendres, and witty songs. A raucous holiday treat!

BWW Review: A CHRISTMAS CAROL at Orlando Shakes

The traditional and beloved tale of greed, reflection, and redemption in the wake of the Christmas season recently hit the stage at Orlando Shakes this past weekend-and no, it's not the tale of the Grinch. Whether you're a seasoned Charles Dickens fan, entirely versed in his holiday classic, 'A Christmas Carol' and the lessons it brings every year, or you're introducing someone new to the story, you might just find that Orlando Shakes' take on the story deserves a spot amongst your own family traditions.
