Artists from around the world are using our theater and gallery–and other LA neighborhoods–to probe urgent issues: Congolese choreographer Faustin Linyekula  uses exquisite movement, music and piercing poetry to masterfully capture the essence of hope in the face of the tragedies facing his war-torn home of the Democratic Republic of the Congo; Activist-powerhouse Karen Finley's incisive writing and performing gives us a freshly hilarious and alarming perspective on drastic changes in our own country; and Chile's famed playwright/director Guillermo Calderón directs the U.S. premiere of his work questioning the vital role of artists at times of injustice. In partnership with Upfor Gallery, Times Square Arts presents artist MSHR's Convolution Weave~Lattice Domain on Times Square's electronic billboards from 11:57 p.m. to midnight every night in August. This project is a part of Midnight Moment, a monthly presentation by The Times Square Advertising Coalition (TSAC) and Times Square Arts. MSHR's work is also currently featured in the Past Skin exhibition at MoMA PS1 (open through September 10, 2017) and The World is Sound at the Rubin Museum (open through January 18, 2018), and will appear in the Sonic Arcade exhibition at the Museum of Arts and Design (September 14, 2017 - February 25, 2018). In partnership with the Audemars Piguet Art Commission, Times Square Arts presents artist Sun Xun's Time Spy on Times Square's electronic billboards from 11:57 p.m. to midnight every night in July. This project is a part of Midnight Moment, a monthly presentation by The Times Square Advertising Coalition (TSAC) and Times Square Arts. One of China's most prominent young artists, Sun Xun created Time Spy for the second Audemars Piguet Art Commission in partnership with Sean Kelly Gallery, Edouard Malingue Gallery and Shanghart Gallery as part of a large-scale immersive multimedia installation first presented during Art Basel in Miami Beach in December 2016. Robert Rauschenberg: Among Friends, a retrospective spanning the six-decade career of this defining figure of contemporary art, will be on view at The Museum of Modern Art from May 21 through September 17, 2017. Organized in collaboration with Tate Modern in London, this exhibition brings together over 250 works, integrating Rauschenberg's astonishing range of production across mediums including painting, sculpture, drawing, prints, photography, sound works, and performance footage. To focus attention on the importance of creative dialogue and collaboration in Rauschenberg's work, MoMA's presentation is structured as an “open monograph”—as other artists, dancers, musicians, and writers came into Rauschenberg's creative life, their work enters the exhibition, mapping the exchange of ideas. These figures, among the most influential in American postwar culture, include Trisha Brown, John Cage, Merce Cunningham, Sari Dienes, Morton Feldman, Jasper Johns, Billy Klüver, Paul Taylor, Jean Tinguely, David Tudor, Cy Twombly, Susan Weil, and many others. On Sunday, November 13, 2016 at 3pm and 7:30pm and Monday, November 14, 2016 at 7:30pm, Works & Process at the Guggenheim presents Working in Process/ New Bodies, the culmination and World Premiere of choreographer Jodi Melnick's Works & Process residency with dancers Sara Mearns, Jared Angle, and Gretchen Smith at the Guggenheim's Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Peter B. Lewis Theater. Melnick's work weaves dance, spoken text, and moderated discussion with Claudia La Rocco, with live music for harpsichord by composer Gyorgy Ligeti, violin by composer Heinrich Biber, and newly commissioned music by Robert Boston.
