(Step Afrika! in November 2013, and The Migration: Reflections on Jacob Lawrence in May 2018).
Step Afrika!'s high energy, full-bodied percussive dance returns to The Soraya for the West Coast premiere of Drumfolk, the Company's 25th Anniversary production now on tour. Inspired by the Stono Rebellion of 1739, Drumfolk explores this little-known event in history that would forever transform African American life and culture. When Africans lost the right to use their drums, the beats found their way into the body of the people, the Drumfolk. New percussive forms took root leading to the development of some of our country's most distinct performance traditions like ring shout, tap, and stepping.
Step Afrika! returns with its newest production, Drumfolk, based on historical events that took place during the 1700s in the Deep South. Building upon the success of The Migration: Reflections on Jacob Lawrence (New Victory 2017), Step Afrika! takes audiences on a journey from the 18th century to present-day America, where body percussion has shaped such modern art forms as hip hop and African American social dance, among others. Drumfolk runs at New Victory from February 28 - March 15, 2020, as part of the production's 10-city tour across the U.S.
Marisol Perez, a young Puerto Rican woman, is a copy editor for a Manhattan publisher. She finds herself on the streets, homeless, where her many encounters include a woman beaten for exceeding her credit limit and a homeless burn victim in a wheelchair looking for his lost skin. Marisol is directed by Alkis Papoutsis plays November 20th - 24th at the BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center (Theatre II).
