TPAC Sets Full 2015-16 Season of Theatre, Music & More

BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center, the longest operating performance venue in lower Manhattan, proudly presents a wide range of events in the 2015-2016 Season, including The National Circus & Acrobats of China, performing on Wednesday, October 14 at 7:30pm, Beyond Third Wave (dance troupe), performing Friday, May 19 and Saturday, May 20 at 7:30pm through Sunday, May 21 at 3:00pm, David Gonzalez with City Of Dreams - Featuring the Poetic License Band performing Friday, October 23 at 8PM, and more! We also continue to present a diverse slate of Family programming, free film retrospectives, and a variety of dance, comedy, and special events.  All 2015-2016 events are listed below with more information. Turtle Island Quartet & Cyrus Chestnut Set for Dizzy's, 10/8

With their trademark wit, virtuosity and irreverence for traditional genre demarcations, the members of the Turtle Island Quartet are the perfect candidates to put a thoroughly unique spin on the works of Jelly Roll Morton, Scott Joplin and Thelonious Monk, drawing out surprising connections along the way. On their brand new program, Jelly, Rags & Monk, the Turtle Island Quartet reunites for the third time with the extraordinary jazz pianist Cyrus Chestnut, after a series of special performances for TIQ's 25th anniversary season with mandolinist Mike Marshall that featured “astonishing versatility,” according to The Washington Post.

The Kennedy Center, in association with the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival, the National New Play Network (NNPN)-the country's alliance of non-profit theaters that champions the development, production, and continued life of new plays-and with Stanford University's National Center for New Plays, will host more than 50 playwrights, directors, and dramaturgs from July 25 to August 2, 2015 as part of the 10th annual weeklong MFA Playwrights' Workshop featuring new works by MFA students from Columbia University, Northwestern University, Fordham University, Yale School of Drama, the Juilliard School, New York University-Tisch School of the Arts, University of California-San Diego, and the Juilliard School.

Kennedy Center Names 2015 Stephen Sondheim Inspirational Teacher Award Winners

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts announced the 2015 winners of Kennedy Center/Stephen Sondheim Inspirational Teacher Awards -- a series of annual grants which recognize American teachers by spotlighting their extraordinary impact on the lives of students. Thirteen teachers were selected in 2015 from a pool of nominations received through the Kennedy Center's website. Award recipients each receive $10,000 and are showcased, along with the people they inspired, on a website dedicated to inspirational teachers. The awards were created in honor of Stephen Sondheim's 80th birthday in 2010 and were initiated and funded through the generous support of Myrna and Freddie Gershon.

Kennedy Center to Present OUTSIDE THE BACHX as Part of Theater for Young Audiences

The Kennedy Center presents the world premiere production of Outside the Bachx from February 20 to March 1, 2015 in the Family Theater. Co-commissioned by the Kennedy Center and Full Circle Productions (a New York City based hip-hop company), co-writers Gabriel "Kwikstep" Dionisio and Ana "Rokafella" Garcia combine dance and spoken word for family audiences-set to classical music and remixes. The creative duo, also co-founders of Full Circle Productions, both direct and choreograph this new work. The press opening performance is Friday, February 20, 2015 at 7 p.m. The production is part of the Kennedy Center Theater for Young Audiences season and is recommended for ages 8 and up.

Jonathan Parker Coming to The Wonderland Ballroom

On Wednesday, December 17th Jonathan Parker brings his octet to Washington DC's quintessential dive bar, The Wonderland Ballroom. Never one to shy away from presenting world-class music in unconventional settings, this past year has seen Parker feature his various musical projects in a wide array of DIY venues. The Jonathan Parker Octet's performance at the Wonderland Ballroom will be no different, as the ensemble will blaze through two sets of material featuring selections from Parker's upcoming release, Interloper (One Trick Dog records) as well as feature local entertainer Linsay Demming (from Black Cat's Church Night).
