BWW Review: Ocean State Ends Season with Effervescent ANYTHING GOES
by Robert Barossi - May 2, 2016

Like any art form, theatrical musicals can run the gamut in tone, style, tenor and execution. You can find everything from dark, serious brooding drama to light-as-a-feather, fluff-filled entertainments. Which is not to say that either side of the spectrum is better or worse than the other, there are highs and lows at both ends of the spectrum. When it comes to the lighter, fluffier fare, there are few as effervescent and entertaining as Cole Porter's Anything Goes, now receiving a top-notch production at Ocean State Theatre Company. BWW Review: THE TEMPEST Delivers a Wave of Top-Notch Talent at Orlando Shakespeare Theater
by April Montgomery - Feb 15, 2016

A tale of mysticism, betrayal, love and the ultimate choice. THE TEMPEST is arguably one of Shakespeare's most cohesive works, with its central plot all taking place on the same day in one location. The storyline is easier to follow than some of the Bard's earlier plays, which is brought to light by the acting and direction in the Orlando Shakespeare production that opened in Central Florida on Friday night. BWW Review: Theatre UCF's Energetic SPUNK AND THE HARLEM LITERATI is Weighed Down by its Own Ambition
by Matt Tamanini - Jan 27, 2016

Ambition can be a dangerous thing, whether you are a guitar-playing drifter in early Twentieth Century Orlando, or a playwright attempting to recontextualize an outdated work. In SPUNK AND THE HARLEM LITERATI, running through January 31st, UCF Theatre professor Be Boyd attempts to take an existing play by author and playwright Zora Neale Hurston, and ham-handedly shoehorn it into a framing device that seeks to admirably put the works of Hurston and her African-American contemporaries into proper cultural context. Unfortunately, the lack of connection between the framing scenes, set on a Harlem rooftop, and those of the play proper, set in rural Eatonville, Florida, robs both of any greater significance. BWW Review: Orlando Shakes' PETER AND THE STARCATCHER is Childlike Fun, but Lacks Potential Magic
by Matt Tamanini - Dec 10, 2015

Ahoy mateys, two ships with very special cargo have docked at the Orlando Shakespeare Theatre. The H.M.S. Wasp and Neverland have brought a thoroughly enjoyable production of the Tony-winning play PETER AND THE STARCATCHER to town for the holidays. Framed by a group of touring British actors, the play requires a willing suspension of disbelief. With simple, multipurpose props and set pieces, the capable cast transforms the stage into ships racing across the ocean and a not-so deserted island where an ancient brand of magic leads to excitement and adventure. BWW Review: UCF's THE DIVINE SISTER is Delightfully Unholy Comedy
by Matt Tamanini - Sep 26, 2015

While it has been nearly 20 years since I was a Catholic school student, I have to admit that I don't quite remember it being much like St. Veronica's in Theatre UCF's production of Charles Busch's bawdy comedy THE DIVINE SISTER. Directed by UCF Associate Professor Kate Ingram, the play runs through October 3rd in the campus' Black Box Theatre. The 2010 Off-Broadway comedy lampoons Hollywood's obsession with nuns, riffing on THE SOUND OF MUSIC, THE BELLS OF ST. MARY, AGNES OF GOD, and more; Busch even mixes in his take on the recent surge in Catholic mythology fiction, a la THE DAVINCI CODE. While the humor might be something that would normally get your hand smacked with a ruler, the show does have an ultimately sweet, faith-affirming message; despite the sacreligious and sophomoric humor that, if you suffer Catholic guilt, will likely have you running for the confessional booth.  (more...)

BWW Review: Theatre UCF's THE UNDERSTUDY is Uneven, Existential Back-Stage Farce
by Matt Tamanini - Sep 19, 2015

Complaining about movie stars on Broadway has become a popular pastime for theatre folk, however, the occasional uproar hasn't stemmed the tide of A-listers looking to get back to, or establish, their legit roots. This theatrical divide is at the center of Theresa Rebeck's THE UNDERSTUDY, playing at Theatre UCF's Black Box through October 4th. The dark, back-stage comedy, while occasionally providing poignant personal moments, struggles to settle into a specific tone for any impactful length of time; occasionally playing like a NOISES OFF farce, at others as AN ACTOR'S NIGHTMARE-type fever dream, and still others as a satire on the theatre's (and popular culture's) obsession with celebrity. Unfortunately, despite Mark Brotherton's brisk, thoughtful direction, the production is never able to unpack all of the sloppily assembled concepts in Rebeck's script; resulting in a mildly entertaining, mildly thought-provoking, but ultimately unsatisfying show.
