Martin E. Segal Theatre Center at CUNY Kicks Off PRELUDE.12 Today, 10/3

The Martin E. Segal Theatre Center at the Graduate Center, CUNY has unveiled the artist lineup and program schedule for the highly anticipated PRELUDE.12, the ninth annual PRELUDE festival dedicated to artists at the forefront of contemporary New York City theatre, dance, interdisciplinary and mediatized performance. In its largest lineup ever, PRELUDE.12 will present over 40 short performances, readings, and screenings -as well as panel discussions with artists, scholars and performers.

Joris Lacoste's 4 PREPARED DREAMS Will Be Presented at FIAF's Crossing the Line Festival, 10/10-10/13

As part of the sixth edition of Crossing the Line 2012, FIAF's annual transdisciplinary festival of contemporary arts, the French Institute Alliance Francaise (FIAF) presents 4 Prepared Dreams, by Crossing the Line 2012 artist-in-residence Joris Lacoste. 4 Prepared Dreams explores hypnosis as an artistic medium with four seminal New York artists: singer-songwriter April March; Obie Award-winning director and writer Annie Dorsen; filmmaker/composer/musician Tony Conrad; and filmmaker Jonathan Caouette, and will be presented in FIAF's Le Skyroom from Wednesday, October 10 through Saturday, October 13, 2012 at 8pm.

David Levine Returns to New York with HABIT at PS122, Now thru 9/30

Performance Space 122 (PS122) and the French Institute Alliance Francaise (FIAF), New York's premiere French cultural center, present the New York premiere of Habit, from David Levine, as part of the 2012 Crossing the Line festival. Habit is a durational performance installation that features three actors performing a 90-minute drama on a continuous loop for eight hours a day. Using a commissioned script by playwright Jason Grote, Habit takes place within a four-walled, fully-furnished and functional American ranch house designed by Marsha Ginsberg and built inside a raw, unused space in the Essex Street Market on the Lower East Side.

Bard College Launches 'Live Arts Bard' Residency and Commissioning Program

This September, Bard College will launch a residency and commissioning program for the performing arts, Live Arts Bard (LAB). LAB is a partnership between the Theater and Performance Program and the Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts, and will be run under the leadership of Gideon Lester, the college's new Director of Theater Programs.

For more than three decades, Performance Space 122 (PS122) has served as a hub for contemporary performance, commissioning and presenting artists who have radicalized theatrical forms, triggered national political and ethical debates, and made waves on Broadway and beyond.

STAGE TUBE: On This Day 7/20- PASSING STRANGE

Today in 2008, Passing Strange closed at the Belasco Theatre, where it ran for 165 performances. Passing Strange is a rock musical about a young African American's artistic journey of self-discovery in Europe, drawing on heavy elements of existentialism, metafictional comedy, and the Künstlerroman. The musical's lyrics and book are by Stew with music and orchestrations by Heidi Rodewald and Stew. It was created in collaboration with director Annie Dorsen. The musical was developed at the Sundance Institute Theatre Lab in 2004 and 2005, one of the only works there ever to be invited back for a second round of development. It had productions in Berkeley, California and Off-Broadway before opening on Broadway in 2008, garnering strong reviews and several awards. Spike Lee filmed the musical on Broadway as a documentary, premiering the film in 2009.

New Repertory Theatre, in residence at the Arsenal Center for the Arts, will conclude its 27th Season with the Tony Award-winning musical Passing Strange. Directed by Kate Warner, with music direction by Todd C. Gordon, and choreography by Kelli Edwards, Passing Strange begins performances on May 1 and runs through May 22, 2011.
